Detailed Description

Kolab is a secure, scalable and reliable groupware server. It is formed by a number of well-known and proven components and adds intelligent interaction between them. There's a web administration interface, management of free-busy lists and resources, synchronization for several devices and more.

The latest version of Kolab is 3.0 released January 15, 2013. We want to package it for Fedora so that the installation becomes as easy as a single yum install kolab.

Benefit to Fedora

The Kolab server will be available out of the box for users and developers.

Kolab Systems employs several Fedora contributors and uses the same development model as Fedora and RHEL. Everything is Free software and the community edition is available free of charge without any technical limitations. But just like Fedora it is evolving fast and has a shorter live cycle. The enterprise versions on the other hand are tested intensively and offer long term support for people with a subscription.

As we use the same methodology, we feel that having Kolab in Fedora will not only offer the users a Free groupware solution but also help to bring together two active communities.

Scope

The main part of this feature is packaging. As Kolab uses proven FLOSS technology, a lot of it's components (389 Dirctory Server, Apache HTTPD, Cyrus IMAPD, Postix SMTPD, Roundcube) are already in Fedora. The rest is already packaged in the Kolab Systems Repo but some still need to be reviewed for inclusion in Fedora.

How To Test

Make sure the Kolab Groupware Server can be installed as described in the Kolab 3.0 Community Installation Guide. As there are no more additional repos to configure, it should come down to a simple

yum install kolab
setup-kolab

User Experience

Users can access Kolab, through various clients among them Kontact (KDE), Outlook (Windows) and Roundcube (Web).

Developers will be able to install the latest and greatest Kolab to participate in the Kolab development and make their work part of the Kolab solution.

Contingency Plan

Don't ship the Kolab 3.0 server.

Release Notes

• This version of Fedora comes with Kolab 3 Community Edition, the latest release of the free groupware solution. To use it, install the kolab package and execute the setup-kolab command.
