Live DVD

Fedora Live System in the Installation DVD

Summary

Add a live system to the installation DVD, so it is easier to review the new features of the release and there would be no need to download an additional spin image. Also, this would help in having a good, Fedora-based recovery system!

Owner

Current status

  • Targeted release: Fedora 11
  • Last updated: 2009-01-10
  • Percentage of completion: 0%

Detailed Description

The live system should be gnome-based, since it is the default / updates-targeted desktop. Maybe the official Fedora gnome-spin boot option should be added to the DVD boot menu.

Benefit to Fedora

The installation DVD would be more comprehensive; no need for separate disks to do different tasks (installation / system recovery / review / overview).

Scope

- The DVD image for i386 release is usually 3.4 GB size, so by adding 700 MB live cd image this will end up with 4.1 GB, which still fits on a normal DVD-R disc. - It does not affect the main development stream, just an additional option for the boot menu.

How To Test

Add this to the future alpha and beta installation DVD releases. When booting the DVD, users can choose the "Boot live system" option.

User Experience

When first booting the new release DVD, choose "Boot live system" option from the boot menu before you install Fedora directly. When you are facing troubles with your current installation, use the Fedora DVD's live system as a recovery system (with GUI instead of the command-line recovery option that is already available).

Dependencies

It does not depend on any package, just the gnome "Fedora Live Spin" should be added to the main DVD image.

Contingency Plan

Add to the next releases. It is not critical.

Documentation

There is no direct documentation regarding this feature, but the main concept is applicable.

Release Notes

  • DRAFT Fedora 11 now ships a live DVD image which contains the full content of the regular DVD install disc along with live cd functionality.
