Detailed Description

The Multi Desktop DVD is a single dual layer DVD with all the Fedora desktop live media (GNOME, KDE, Xfce, LXDE and Moblin) for both 32 and 64 bit on it. The individual spins are stored as ISO images, so it is possible to burn CDs or make live USB keys from the data. To create the image the Multiboot Media Creator is used.

Benefit to Fedora

One problem the ambassadors are facing that the hardly don't know what kid of media the audience on an event is requesting most: Once they want KDE, the next time they want GNOME. Once they want 32 bit, the next time 64. As a result they need to bring more media to an event, this means more shipping and and more leftovers. Although the costs for a dual layer DVD are slightly higher than for a standard DVD, the Multi-Desktop DVD will dramatically lower the costs of media production. It also is more environment friendly.

Dependencies

  1. Artwork: Handled by feature owner based on the F14 media art.
  2. Testing: Was performed by members of the EMEA ambassadors group
  3. Image creation: To be handled by rel-eng (as per Media Handout Requirements)
  4. Usage instructions on the media sleeve: To be handled by Jared Smith (as per Media Handout Requirements)
  5. Media production: Handled by feature owner with Media bit

Scope / Testing

As all the individual spins have have their own test plans and undergone intensive testing, so there is not much we need to test. We mainly need to test the boot manager: All entries must boot the desired spin and boot correctly. They also must install correctly. So far this has been tested independently by 3 ambassadors.

Testing can be performed within any virtualization that can boot off ISO images, but for full coverage a virtualization that can do both 23 and 64 bit is needed.

User Experience

A user only has one DVD and can select the spin he wants to boot in the boot manager. The boot menu is shown by default and if no selection is done within 60 seconds, it automatically boots into the 32 bit GNOME desktop spin.

Spins Page

None, the media is only for physical distribution on events. Nevertheless it will be hosted on http://alt.fedproject.org.
