| Short version

| |
| * Assuming it's complete or nearly so, do a barcamp session on bootstrapping your enterprise network with Puppet and Puppetmanaged.org, with Jeroen van Meeuwen.
| |
| * Discuss with anyone who's interested how we can improve our summer mentoring with any post GSoC Mentor Summit information.
| |
| * Try to log as many bar camp sessions via IRC and try to involve internet people as well, perhaps coordinate the effort with others if we have volunteers.

| '''Requested amount approx 200CAD for the hotel, airfare is costing me 1200 USD, but a significant portion of the trip is to visit my family. Any assistance with travel is also appreciated. Since the money isn't an absolute must, i can cover it out of pocket too, if there are more deserving people, i'm not starving or anything.'''

| Unfortunately i've been busy with work so i don't have as many things to report on this Fudcon. Still, there are a couple of tasks that are pretty important.
| |
|
| |
| First and foremost i want to talk more about using Puppet to manage enterprise setups. We've been using Puppet at the Genomics Center based on Jeroen van Meeuwen's original configuration. I'm currently in the process of modernizing our configuration to the current Puppetmanaged upstream. One of the challenges we're having is bootstrapping a new setup from scratch. If all goes well, the ultimate ideal is being able to put your entire infrastructure on a USB stick. With this infrastructure, in roughly the amount of time it takes to sync a complete repo tree, you can deploy out an entire infrastructure with minimal effort. Depending on how much work gets done between now and December, it will either be a presentation on how it's been done or how we could go about doing it.

| Secondly, i would like to focus on tightening up our Mentoring Process for Summer coders. Google has graciously offered us slots in the Google Summer of Code program for some time now, and we've had a very good success rate with it so far. Even so, there's always something we can do better. One glaring issue is that no one knows what anyone else is doing. If you asked the average Fedora developer on the street, they would have no idea what is going on in GSoC. He might also not quite know what he's doing out of bed or not in front of his computer. Furthermore, GSoC is split between JBoss and Fedora. Since i will be going to the Mentor Summit with Toshio this year, i want to hold another discussion session with the average Fedora developer on the street on how we can promote activities better without just creating more noise. Doing so is important to get better integration with our students and the rest of the community. It will encourage a better rate of returning contributors after the program, which is a goal that is well aligned with Google's goals as well.

| At FAD EMEA in Rheinfelden, i felt like we needed more involvement from people who unfortunately couldn't be present. Using IRC as a secondary medium also enabled us to log our conversations better and created a very open method of note taking. I think the results were surprisingly effective and encouraging. For critical conversations it allowed people to get a voice to participate with minimal costs. I realized that this method, scaled and tweaked a bit could encourage non FudCon participants to become active participants as well. It presented a solution to a problem that has been bugging me for the past two years. I plan on gathering together a few volunteers before FUDCon and coordinating an effort during FUDCon to help document the activities online as much as possible. The goal is to make it possible for people to give input to barcamp sessions freely over IRC or other mediums by digesting and presenting the material handled in real life over as many mediums as possible.
