Fedora BrOffice.org

Summary

Due to a brand layer introduced in OpenOffice.org 3.0, Fedora now has the BrOffice.org brand for the office suite, starting with Fedora 10. This spin is intended to be a Brazilian Portuguese localized spin that provides the legal brand for OpenOffice.org in Brazil. It will be based on the Fedora Desktop Spin.

Detailed Description

Regarding bug #358021, the inclusion of BrOffice.org in Fedora is a important change for Brazilian users. We will have a legal supported trademark that replaces "OpenOffice.org". This allow us to create a spin focused on Desktop application and provide a standard .ks that can help Brazilians to build their own spins including BrOffice.org.

The BrOffice.org Spin for Fedora 10 is hosted at http://spins.fedoraproject.org/. We expect to keep the same model for upcoming Fedora releases.

Except for the substitution of Abiword, Gnumeric and Gimp by BrOffice.org Writer, BrOffice.org Calc, BrOffice.org Impress and BrOffice.org Draw we will focus on keeping this spin as similar as possible to the Fedora Desktop LiveCD, opinions are welcome. The spin is focused on a i686 LiveCD image, but a x86_64 live image is available as well.

Benefit to Fedora

Red Hat Brasil helps local Ambassadors with LiveCDs and DVD medias. With BrOffice.org Spin, Red Hat Brasil will be able to print and distribute Fedora BrOffice.org LiveCDs to Ambassadors.

Prosecuting Counsel of Tocantins State uses Fedora and BrOffice.org in their Desktops, so we will provide a spin which fit their needs. Therefore, BrOffice.org is the default office suite in Brazilian Labor Justice. This spin will help such organizations to test Fedora and BrOffice.org.

ABNT, the Brazilian standardization agency, approved ODF as the standard format for documents. Those users who want to try Fedora, BrOffice.org and ODF will have a LiveCD made for them.

Kickstart File

This Spin has already been accepted for Fedora 10, and the kickstart is therefore in the spin-kickstarts GIT repository at http://fedorahosted.org/spin-kickstarts/browser/fedora-livecd-broffice.org.ks

The kickstart file for Fedora 11 is available at the same link in spin-kickstarts GIT repository.

ISO Name / FS Label

  • FS Label: Fedora-12-i686-Live-BrOffice
  • ISO Name: Fedora-12-i686-Live-BrOffice.iso

Dependencies

We depend on openoffice.org-3.x, hunspell and broffice.org-* packages. All already in Rawhide.

Scope / Testing

OpenOffice.org brand layer is already in Rawhide. We need to build the spin and assure that there is no overlap between the traditional OpenOffice.org brand and BrOffice.org one. For instance, we don't want to have both OpenOffice.org Writer and BrOffice.org Writer in the spin, just the last one.
