Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing 2012

This year's Grace Hopper conference will feature several open source focused activities, including a FOSS projects booth where Leslie Hawthorn will represent Fedora. Other open source related activities include several panel discussions on getting involved in FOSS, as well as Grace Hopper Open Source Day where participants will do coding projects for several humanitarian FOSS projects.

While this conference is focused primarily on women, everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

About the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing

Co-founded by Dr. Anita Borg and Dr. Telle Whitney in 1994 and inspired by the legacy of Admiral Grace Murray Hopper, the Institute’s Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) Of Women In Computing Conference is designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. It is the largest technical conference for women in computing and results in collaborative proposals, networking and mentoring for junior women and increased visibility for the contributions of women in computing. Conference presenters are leaders in their respective fields, representing industry, academia and government. Top researchers present their work while special sessions focus on the role of women in today’s technology fields.

About Open Source Day

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) adoption and usage is becoming widespread and many employment opportunities require experience on FOSS projects. It can be daunting to know how to contribute to an existing FOSS project or release your individual software tool or application under an open source license.

We invite you to come spend the day coding for humanitarian causes in a dynamic, collaborative environment. At the end of the day participants of all skill levels will walk away with new confidence when engaging with an existing FOSS project or starting their own community developed software project. They will also walk away with the satisfaction of knowing they helped make the world a little bit better for those in need.

We have several projects joining us who would like your help during Open Source Day and who would welcome you as a long term contributor to their projects. Contributing to open source projects is an excellent way to expand your network, build a professional portfolio, sharpen your coding and documentation skills and have fun!
