Detailed Description

Starting from Release 33, Fedora Workstation uses default time of day backgrounds as a visual showcase. Spins and lab maintainers running on desktop environment unable to support animated wallpaper will be able to select a different frame from the default (and variant) background.

Historically, animated background was first used by default on Fedora 7 Moonshine and became optional since then.

The animated background consists of an XML file and a series of images. The XML file defines transitions between the images. Usually only the colors vary, transitioning to darker colors at night, lighter colors in the morning, standard colors during daytime.

Benefit to Fedora

Fedora Workstation will showcase its time of day background seamlessly as default.

Design Suite Labs, which is based from Workstation, and Fedora Silverblue will take advantage of its change. Other Spins and Labs will remains unaffected unless their respective maintainers wish to use the default animated background.

Scope

  • Proposal owners:
    • Fedora Workstation may need a slight increase of its ISO file size in order to implement the animated backgrounds which are in PNG format. Each frame from animation will be selectable from the Background Settings.
    • Until Fedora 32, time of day wallpapers contained a huge set on png backgrounds linked to their screen format which drastically increased its size. Matching the method applied by the GNOME design team, only four png files are left to save space.
    • The subpackage animated is eliminated from Fedora 33 release and integrated into the base package.
    • Other desktop environment SIG are welcome to improve the approach.
  • Other developers: N/A (not a System Wide Change)
  • Release engineering: N/A
  • Policies and guidelines: N/A (not a System Wide Change)
  • Trademark approval: N/A (not needed for this Change)

Upgrade/compatibility impact

Users upgrading from previous Fedora release with the default settings will notice an animated background reflecting time of the day. They will be able to select the frame version.
