What are CVEs?
CVE stands for Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures. CVEs are common identifiers for publicly known computer security vulnerabilities. When a potential security vulnerability is discovered, a CVE is opened and disclosure is handled referencing this number. CVEs are particularly important to US government and military system administrators as most CVEs are used to create an Information Assurance Vulnerability Alert or IAVA. System administrators of government and military systems but verify compliance with the IAVAs to make sure their systems have been patched appropriately. That means system administrators much verify that a CVE has been patched in the package updates they have installed.
