Multimedia

Theora 1.1

Fedora 12 ships with an improved version of Package-x-generic-16.pnglibtheora. This new version codenamed Thusnelda gives users better video quality while keeping the size of a video the same. --Needs More--

Volume Control

Following in the foot steps of Fedora 11 volume control now includes profile support, better input switching, and fade control. --Needs More--

Thusnelda

In support of Free Culture, the open web and to reduce the hold of proprietary and patent encumbered codecs, Red Hat has been sponsoring improvements on the open Ogg Theora video codec implementation codenamed Thusnelda via Christopher Montgomery (xiphmont), who created the format and work has resulted in drastic improvements to the codec. This release features this next generation codec. All applications using libtheora library including all the Gstreamer applications will automatically and transparently be taking advantage of the improvements.

PulseAudio Enhancements

Fedora developers have been made several improvements to the PulseAudio system. More details here. These include the following:

  • A New Mixer Logic
  • UPnP MediaServer Support
  • Hotplug Support Improved
  • Surround Sound Support for Event Sounds

Currently, the media production applications go into the Multimedia group (Sound&Video group in GNOME) in the desktop menu, mixing up with audio/video players (we also have a wide range of such applications), and make this group rather cluttered.

Outline

The key is to make the applications easily accessible. Too many subcategories and the inexperienced user will get lost. In the table below, we propose a solution to this problem by grouping applications that show similar features. The (sub)categories are bulleted and are in bold. The numbered entries indicate what type of applications will fall into the corresponding (sub)category. The green entries associated with each group indicate what type of .desktop file categories each group will host. Release Notes
