Distance from airport to LatinoWare

Outline of local mass transit.

Foz do Iguaçu is connected to the east by the road BR-277, to Paranaguá, and also to the east by the Friendship Bridge to Ciudad del Este (Paraguay), and to the south to Puerto Iguazú (Argentina) by the Fraternity Bridge.

In 2003, the city initiated an integrated city fare and created a hub near the city center. Now, most of the bus routes pass through this hub and passengers pay a standard fare within the city zone, which enables them to transfer routes, even when these may be operated by another company. The transport network extends to certain distant areas, such as the city's airport and the Iguazu Park, but not between the city and its neighbor Ciudad del Este, nor with Puerto Iguazú, which are serviced by other companies.

Description of on the ground resources and their experience with FUDCon/other large events.

Foz do Iguaçu will host the Latin-American Open Source Software Conference – Latinoware 2011. Close to 3,000 people, among students, professionals and specialists in the areas, are expected for the seventh edition of the event, located at the facilities of the Itaipu Power Plant.

Promoted by Itaipu Bi-National, Foundation Itaipu Technological Park - Brazil, State of Paraná, Data Processing Company (Celepar) and the Federal Data Processing Service (Serpro), Latinoware is an event that opens space for discussion and reflection on the use of Open Source Software in Latin America, in addition to promoting integration and valuing at the Latin American level.

Like in the previous editions, Latinoware should again break the attendance record have, and more serve as stage for international celebrities and representatives of public and private agencies from many Latin American countries to present their solutions in Open Source Software.

Latinoware already received parallel events like the GNOME Forum and the Fedora Latin American Ambassadors and Users Conference for three years in a row: 2007, 2008, 2009

Notation of internet connectivity options for both hotel and conference venue.

The conference venue offers an open wireless network which is used during Latinoware by all participants. There is also a wired network into the booths. The hotels also offer wireless connectivity, but they use to charge the service.

Outline of proximate restaurant locations.

In the place of the event is offered lunch for participants and around the Hotels are restaurants and convenience stores around 2 blocks closed from it.

Deadlines for event reservation, etc.

We should start the event and hotel reservations at least six months before the event, so we will be able to organize everything correctly and will be prepared for contingencies.

Pros and Cons of the proposed location.

Pros

  • Latinoware is a big event and will draw a lot of attention to FUDCon
  • The event already received a conference of Latin American Fedora ambassadors
  • The city is placed in the border with Argentina and Paraguai
  • There are appropriated computer resources for hackfests

Cons

  • The event is usually organized in October or November so it will be a bit distant of the last FUDCon LATAM

Potential attendees and event approach

In order to organize the hackfests we intent to focus on groups of interest. For instance, group key people from Localization and Internationalization to hack together during the event, as well as infrastructure and packagers contributors. The idea is to bring in new contributors but also to create value for Fedora during FUDCon LATAM. Local community has at least 3 people from each area such L10N/I18N, infrastructure, and packaging who can help develop interesting hackfests.
