Goals
As far as we have seen there is no previous FUDCon focused on goals.

# Provide as much skill transfer between international contributors and local contributors as possible.
# Provide as much training for collaborating with Fedora as possible as a mean to recruit new contributors.
# Produce results such as translation, documentation, packaging and not least important regional working agreements.
# Promote the local collaborators to be known by the rest of the international community.

Team members have organized and been part of the staff in small and large events. Small events like university visits, informal gatherings and Fedora release parties. Large events like, Document Freedom Day, FLISOL and Software Freedom Day.

Brief description of the city
We will be looking to have supporting staff, so current collaborators can make the most of the event. The venue offers a degree program in tourism whose students usually staff events at the university.

Managua
Managua, is the Capital City of Nicaragua. The city was destroyed on the earthquake of 1972 and still the old center has not entirely been rebuilt. A new center has emerged South of the old city center, full of commerce and night life. It is a relatively safe city. The city has a few tall buildings and concrete cobbled streets. The city has been expanding with empty spaces in between, so there is no way of walking the city and in several places there is no side walks. It has the Managua lake on the north and hills on the South. The climate is warm all year round. In rainy season usually we got heavy rain for a couple of hours and the rest of the day can be enjoyed.

Major local airports and their distance from lodging and venue.
Managua is the Capital city of Nicaragua. One distinct feature is that has a lot of concrete cobbled streets. You can not walk the city, you may walk within some neighbourhood, but usually distances are beyond walking distance and there is lack of side walks. The address system is based on landmark references. You may think that Managua is a place "Where streets have no names", but in true is that nobody uses them.
The major air port is Agusto Cesar Sandino and it code is MGA. It is located about 12 km East of the city center, this will be also more o least the distance to the hotel. The distance can be traveled on about 20 minutes or 40 minutes in rush hours (form 7 to 9 am or from 4 to 6 pm).

Airport
Managua International airport Agusto Cesar Sandino has MGA code (which is very important for internet fare searches). It is serve by Avianca-TACA, Copa, American Airlines, Delta, United, Spirit and Nature Air. You may expect to get connection at Miami, Houston, Atlanta, San Salvador or Panama City. Airport is about 12 kilometers from city center.

Most hotels offer shuttle, although some times payment is required for this service. Most time there is need to book those services.
Local Transportation
The public transportation is overcrowded. A bus routes map exists and can be found here

There are car rentals and taxis available at the airport, as in any international airport.
There is plenty of taxi cabs but they don't have fare meters. You have to agree on the fare beforehand, and it is expected that you bargain over the price.

Outline of local mass transit.
Schedule
Public transportation does not meet the city demand, and buses usually circulate over their capacity. There  has been a renovation on several bus cooperatives, but you can expect to see plenty of old yellow schooll buses de-comitioned from use in the US serving routes in Managua.
Dates
October 23th to October 25th, 2014.

There is plenty of cabs and the fares are not that expensive, usually the equivalent to two or three dollars per ride within the city. There are no fare meters, so be prepare to be overcharged as tourist and also bargain over the price is expected. People usually call their destination and negotiate the price before taking the taxi.
This will be at mid rainy season. Temperature will be around 26C / 80F with 50% of rain probability. When rains, usually it is for a short time, most likely at the end of the afternoon.

Most people think that in Managua streets has no name. There are street names, the problem is that nobody use them. Managua address are based on reference to land marks, some of them long gone and only known to locals. Both, Hotel and Conference Venue are well known landmarks. Just saying the name taxi drivers will know the address (if not, better look for another driver that knows the city!)
Agenda
Probably will be a good idea to hire a van.
The schedule we propose tries to address some concerns. It is really difficult to obtain sponsorship if there is not topics. Also it is difficult to invite people with no topics. So we propose to have predefined talks to attract sponsors and public. We want to lower the profile of barcamp, as not many people understand the concept. All local barcamps organized had been social (drinking) activities with no technical part. Going further, we want to produce results, so we need workshops where people do stuff while they learn something. It is a two fold goal.

!Day !! Time !! Activities
The proposed Venue is Universidad Centroamericana, it is a catholic university administered by the Jesuit order. It is one of the best universities on the country and it is the only university with a FOSS community GUL-UCA. Among the private universities UCA is the biggest, having several conference rooms. It has several labs, one of them has already installed Fedora. Starting 2012, UCA is a smoking free area.

Conference Halls Prices by Hour
As usual there are informal gathering after the daily activities, we are planning on having a conference room at the hotel. This will be avaliable to meet and engage in further interaction between local and international collaborators. The plan is to have a car to provide transport for those collaborators that live far and where public transportation stops to provide service at certain hours.
* Aula Magna, 400p $120
* Xabier Gorotiaga, 220p $100
* Roberto Terán, 120p $75
* Amando Lopez, 60p $50 (suited for video conferences)
* Post graduate classrooms 40p $15

This is the top price, we have arrangements for discounts. We can expect to pay less. All the halls and classrooms have a computer and a projector included in the price. Halls over 100p have sound system included in the price.
Fud-Pub
We'll have a sports day in Zona Deportiva. The place has pitches for many games such as football, American football, baseball and softball. There are many stores around. After playing we'll have a dinner in there.

Proposed dates
Venue
Mid July, 2013. The university will be on vacations, that will ensure that we will have conference halls and postgraduate classrooms available. Most important we can use the internet service of the university as there will be nobody else. Probably they will charge us for that, but will be a low charge. The people doing ground work in the university are students and vacations serve best for them as they don't have to skip classes.
The venue is Universidad de Ciencias Comerciales. This is a small university, every building is easy to finger point. Their conference hall is mid size, they have a second conference hall and some small conference rooms and have some medium size labs.

We are planning for Thursday, Friday and Saturday event. The exact dates will be arranged at the end of the year when the University publish the academic calendar.
There are many business nearby, like banks, computer stores, mobile cell phone offices, office supply stores, convenience stores and supermarket. UCC has sponsored some free software events in the past.

Weather
Logistics
This will be within raining season. Heavy rain fall should be expected. Most times, it rains for a couple of hours and then you can enjoy the rest of the day. Umbrellas and rain jackets are no match, you need a water proof poncho or a rain coat... most smart people just wait and relax.  Some times the moisture makes the temperature feel hotter than actually is. When it rains usually it cools a bit. This is tropic... bring light clothes, hat, sun block, be prepare for drinking a lot of water. Not sure if we will have time for swimming, but may be good idea to bring swim suit. Rain bring mosquitoes, so also bring repellent to be on the safe side.
Accommodation
Proposed Schedule
Our official Hotel is Mansión Teodolinda. It offers a good Internet infrastructure and is offering a meeting room for hacking after hours. It has been offered to provide transport to the venue free of charges. The hotel has airport shuttle service, this is a pending issue to negotiate.

* Thursday morning: Registration, Key notes and Barcamp preparation
Near by there are some small bars, pharmacy, shopping centre (food court, cinemas and small stands of mobile phone companies) and a gas station (24 hours convenience store and ATM).
* Thurday afternoon: Barcamp
* Friday morning: Barcamp
* Friday afternoon: Hacking
* Friday night: Fudpub
* Saturday: Hacking
* Sunday: Tourist trip (for those leaving late or staying over, but will be an extra outside FUDCon budget)

Fud-Pub
Catering
Within the campus there is a nice place with picnic tables that can be used for lunch. They have a big place for lunch, and they can provide us lunch if we arrange that beforehand. There are many small places to eat nearby.  We can even choose to go to restaurants for lunch, as there are some in reasonable distance.

There is a popular Nicaraguan food for festivities called "Caballo Bayo". Food is serve in a buffet, clay pottery that holds ignited charcoals and on top there is a big clay plate holding the food hot. Usually there is shredded beef, shredded chicken, minced pork, plantains, cheese, cream, among other stuff. You take corn tortillas in a plate and serve whatever you like. We plan to host this dinner as fud-pub on the hotel. The quotation if for food and non alcoholic beverages for 100 people. The price in budget includes a 15% discount in Hotel Mansión Teodolinda.
Pre-registration system
Description of proposed lodging and estimated costs along with a written agreement from lodging specifying rates
Travel
Hotel Mansión Teodolinda is located in a residential area, close to banks, embassies and shops, which makes a quiet place but very accessible to several activities. It has some mid size conference facilities, that can be used for after hours activities like hacking or common room.  There are several bed and breakfast in the surrounding area that can be arranged in case there is need for more rooms. The hotel is located about 3 km North-West of the University.
Visa information
The hotel has 5 gallon dispenser of purified water on the corridors free of charge. Half litter bottle of water are for sale on the restaurant. Internet is complimentary for the guests. Rates include full breakfast. Taxes are not included. Nicaragua has 15% sales tax that will be added to all transactions. Additionally there is a Hospitality tax that is 2% charged only to room rates.
People from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador only require valid government issued ID to enter Nicaragua.

The rest of countries required valid passport. The passport expiration day should be at least six months later than the entry day. Most country does no require visa. However there is a short list of countries that their nationals require to obtain visa before travelling to Nicaragua. Having in mind countries that have fedora collaborators, people from Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru require visa. This is a decision within the consular office, should be a short time waiting. For some other countries, not relevant to our case, the visa have to be consulted to the inmigration offices at Nicaragua and take longer to be processed. You can consult the complete list at the foreign ministry web site (Spanish)

There is a fee at the migration check point (airport o border) of USD 5.00 applied to foreigners.

Buses
As Nicaragua is at the center of Central America, it is possible for people to travel by bus. Both way bus tickets to Managua

:* Put an X in the $$$ column if you need funding to attend, and visit the FUDCon ticket tracker to make a funding request. We have a limited budget and will work hard to fund as many people as possible.  We'll use these answers to help figure out budgeting for the event.  We are making arrangements for attendees from other geographic regions to encourage specific initiatives such as future FUDCon events, but preference may otherwise be given to people in North America.
:* Put a V in the Veg column if you would like vegetarian fare for any meals that we provide during the event.  If you prefer vegan fare, please mark that column VV.  We will do our best to make sure everyone is accommodated! Note: "Hell No" and similar statements are offensive to some and should not be included in this column.
:* Put your T-shirt size in the Size column, so we can have an idea about what sizes to have available. Only Unisex (Mens Sizes will be ordered)

Brief description of on the ground resources and their experience with FUDcon/other large events.
The local FOSS community has been awarded as best event for Software Freedom Day in 2007 and 2008. UCA has hosted SFD on 2008 and 2009.  In 2009 there was an Central America Free Software Gathering. Another different event more complex on logistic was Librebus in 2011. In 2012 Nicaragua hosted DEBConf. The relationship with the FOSS community es very strong. We have a mailing list growing at every event that it is used only to invite people to new events.

Local Fedora contributors (alphabetically) German Ruíz, Joel Dávila, Lila Gutierrez, Neville A. Cross, Walter Danilo Vargas and Yader Velasquez have been working on organizing large events like FLISOL, Document Freedom Day, Software Freedom Day mentioned above, but also have helped on Fedora release party events.

Media Coverage
The link with news media can get us on national TV and National newspaper as news coverage as we have done in the past for large events. The media plan is to send articles to IT section of news papers so the y can pick up and make the news about the event. We can get TV time in variety shows were they talk about events, we have been successful to secure air time. We usually partner with radio and we have interview to talk about the events. Depending on the sponsors we can even have radio announcements. We have been talking with Güegüe Comunicaciones and most likely they will sponsor some adds on the newspaper (but we haven't agree on that).

Then we have the mailing list of Linux Tour that got every email from each participant to invite them later to upcoming events. Last resource is social media, last meeting we agree on change our approach to social media and be more proactive on the local level.
----

So we plan to reach people beyond the university, as our experience in previous events on the campus is that almost nobody just randomly walks on the university and decides to enter in a FOSS event.

Our only fear in the field is overcrowding the facilities that we arrange for the event.

Every single room has an Ethernet jack and there is coverage for wireless internet in the hotel. There is one Ethernet jack in every meeting room and they have coverage for wireless internet. The hotel capacity at the moment is two fiber optic of 2Mb each with load balancing (very unlikely that we will have failure on both providers). It can be expanded during this event. The hotel is accommodating on guest needs, to increase the number of access points, and also provide network switches on the meeting rooms.

Universidad Centroamericana has launched a wireless network across campus with a captive portal for authentication. They named their network RiUCA. There some spots out of the coverage. Conference halls have their own access points. Past experience has shown that in technical events, the current setup is overwhelmed. We hope, as we are planning for vacation time, that this will not be an issue for us.

Hotel
The hotel has a restaurant serving from 6am to 9pm. If you are old enough you can order local rum and beers and enjoy those by the pool. Nicaraguan rum is really good, and beers are also great. If you are not old enough or not into alcohol, you should try a milk shake the local ice cream is really creamy.

There is a food court on Plaza Inter Shopping  Mall less than half kilometer north east. In front of the Shopping Mall there is one restaurant offering national dishes for lunch and dinner, during night they perform live show with national music. There are one bar one block North (cheap beers), and another half block east (eclectic). There is a Lounge half block North (gay friendly). There is a Irish Pub about four block west (has the largest selection on imported beers of the city).

Conference Venue
UCA has small cafeterias within the campus where sandwiches and hot-dog can be purchased. There is a small buffet place where more formal meal can be obtained. There is one coffee place where elaborate coffee can be obtained. National University Council has dictated that there is no alcohol consumption on campuses, and bars should be at least 100 meters away of Universities.

There are Pizza Hut and Macdonald's less that half kilometer East. Metrocentro Shopping mall has a food court and is located less than 1 km East. There are one sea food restaurant and two sport bars that serve lunch less than half kilometer South.

Goals

As far as we have seen there is no previous FUDCon focused on goals.

  1. Provide as much skill transfer between international contributors and local contributors as possible.
  2. Provide as much training for collaborating with Fedora as possible as a mean to recruit new contributors.
  3. Produce results such as translation, documentation, packaging and not least important regional working agreements.
  4. Promote the local collaborators to be known by the rest of the international community.

Fudcon-managua.jpg

Organizing Team

(Alphabetically by surname)

Team members have organized and been part of the staff in small and large events. Small events like university visits, informal gatherings and Fedora release parties. Large events like, Document Freedom Day, FLISOL and Software Freedom Day.

We will be looking to have supporting staff, so current collaborators can make the most of the event. The venue offers a degree program in tourism whose students usually staff events at the university.

Managua

Managua lake.png

Managua is the Capital city of Nicaragua. One distinct feature is that has a lot of concrete cobbled streets. You can not walk the city, you may walk within some neighbourhood, but usually distances are beyond walking distance and there is lack of side walks. The address system is based on landmark references. You may think that Managua is a place "Where streets have no names", but in true is that nobody uses them.

Local Transportation

The public transportation is overcrowded. A bus routes map exists and can be found here

There is plenty of taxi cabs but they don't have fare meters. You have to agree on the fare beforehand, and it is expected that you bargain over the price.

Schedule

Dates

October 23th to October 25th, 2014.

This will be at mid rainy season. Temperature will be around 26C / 80F with 50% of rain probability. When rains, usually it is for a short time, most likely at the end of the afternoon.

Agenda

The schedule we propose tries to address some concerns. It is really difficult to obtain sponsorship if there is not topics. Also it is difficult to invite people with no topics. So we propose to have predefined talks to attract sponsors and public. We want to lower the profile of barcamp, as not many people understand the concept. All local barcamps organized had been social (drinking) activities with no technical part. Going further, we want to produce results, so we need workshops where people do stuff while they learn something. It is a two fold goal.

FUDPub

As usual there are informal gathering after the daily activities, we are planning on having a conference room at the hotel. This will be avaliable to meet and engage in further interaction between local and international collaborators. The plan is to have a car to provide transport for those collaborators that live far and where public transportation stops to provide service at certain hours.

Fud-Pub

We'll have a sports day in Zona Deportiva. The place has pitches for many games such as football, American football, baseball and softball. There are many stores around. After playing we'll have a dinner in there.

Venue

The venue is Universidad de Ciencias Comerciales. This is a small university, every building is easy to finger point. Their conference hall is mid size, they have a second conference hall and some small conference rooms and have some medium size labs.

There are many business nearby, like banks, computer stores, mobile cell phone offices, office supply stores, convenience stores and supermarket. UCC has sponsored some free software events in the past.

Logistics

Accommodation

Teodolinda.png

Our official Hotel is Mansión Teodolinda. It offers a good Internet infrastructure and is offering a meeting room for hacking after hours. It has been offered to provide transport to the venue free of charges. The hotel has airport shuttle service, this is a pending issue to negotiate.

Near by there are some small bars, pharmacy, shopping centre (food court, cinemas and small stands of mobile phone companies) and a gas station (24 hours convenience store and ATM).

Catering

Within the campus there is a nice place with picnic tables that can be used for lunch. They have a big place for lunch, and they can provide us lunch if we arrange that beforehand. There are many small places to eat nearby. We can even choose to go to restaurants for lunch, as there are some in reasonable distance.

Pre-registration system

To register for a workshop or hacking session, please go to fudconlatam.org.

Travel

Visa information

Instructions
Please add your name to the list if you will attend. Also, please indicate the following:
  • Put an X in the $$$ column if you need funding to attend, and visit the FUDCon ticket tracker to make a funding request. We have a limited budget and will work hard to fund as many people as possible. We'll use these answers to help figure out budgeting for the event. We are making arrangements for attendees from other geographic regions to encourage specific initiatives such as future FUDCon events, but preference may otherwise be given to people in North America.
  • Put a V in the Veg column if you would like vegetarian fare for any meals that we provide during the event. If you prefer vegan fare, please mark that column VV. We will do our best to make sure everyone is accommodated! Note: "Hell No" and similar statements are offensive to some and should not be included in this column.
  • Put your T-shirt size in the Size column, so we can have an idea about what sizes to have available. Only Unisex (Mens Sizes will be ordered)
  • Roomsharing:
    1. If you want or need to share a room, mark yes in the "Roomshare?" column.
    2. Once you have a roommate, both of you should mark your roommate's name in the block as well.
    3. If you need a roommate, look for someone with just a yes in the column, and contact them via email. If you encounter any problems, let the organizers know.
Use the Comments section for anything else you think organizers need to know, or to offer or ask for space or rides.
