This one here is now KDE-based due to some space problems with the old version. We may have a discussion on this (and on the included applications) on the mailing list or during a meeting.
== Benefit to Fedora ==
This effort helps to increase Fedora's visibility in the educational sector (among the already existing ones like K12LTSP & OLPC) and to enlarge our community. We are going to release a spin, which allows students, as well as educators and teachers to use the advantages of open source software not only in classrooms or at work, but also at home.

This one is related to mathematical applications and will be one of our first spins. We might still change one or another thing...
== Scope ==
The requirements for achieving this goal are fairly small. Please see also the [[SIGs/Education/EducationLive| EducationLive]] page for further information. The required packages are all already in Fedora, so it's a question of creating the spin and getting it approved.

Fedora Education Math Spin

Summary

This feature concerns the release of a spin, which contains applications for educational purposes.

Owner

  • Name: SebastianDziallas

Current status

  • Targeted release: Fedora 10
  • Last updated: 2008-07-28
  • Percentage of completion: 80%

Detailed Description

The major goal right now is to provide a Fedora Education Math Spin, which should be released with Fedora 10. It includes a KDE 4.1 desktop environment and various applications for mathematical and educational purposes.

Please see also:

  • the wiki page of the Education SIG
  • our package selection below (for Fedora Education Math Spin)

The Kickstart file is located here: http://git.fedoraproject.org/git/spin-kickstarts.git?a=blob;f=fedora-livecd-education-math.ks;

Benefit to Fedora

This effort helps to increase Fedora's visibility in the educational sector (among the already existing ones like K12LTSP & OLPC) and to enlarge our community. We are going to release a spin, which allows students, as well as educators and teachers to use the advantages of open source software not only in classrooms or at work, but also at home.

Scope

The requirements for achieving this goal are fairly small. Please see also the EducationLive page for further information. The required packages are all already in Fedora, so it's a question of creating the spin and getting it approved.

Test Plan

Testing will follow Fedora's release cycle! We're working on releasing previews with the corresponding alpha and beta releases.

  • build spin based on Rawhide (take care of its size!)
  • test, whether it boots and all applications are accesible
  • report any bugs

User Experience

Have a functional, working spin ready, which allows the user to use the various educational open source applications.

Dependencies

  • for Fedora Education Math Spin: all packages are already in Fedora

The educational applications are listed below. We're also going to rely on a KDE 4.1 desktop environment, which is already in Rawhide. Therefore, no further dependencies are needed!

package name in Fedora?
kdeedu-math yes
qalculate-gtk yes
wxmaxima yes
octave yes
gnuplot yes
Macaulay2 yes
orpie yes

Contingency Plan

  • release a first preview using generic-logos based on F10 alpha
  • in the meantime, gather further feedback from users and...
  • ...get the spin approved (Spin SIG, FESCo, Rel-Eng,...)
  • release the final spin with Fedora 10

The spin itself does not affect Fedora in any critical way!

Documentation

Not necessarily needed or required - each software comes with it's own documentation. Instructions for users - "which software does what?" - might be provided on the Education SIG's wiki page.

Release Notes

This feature does not necessarily need to be mentioned in the official release notes, but we might publish a kind of release later with the spin.
