Tablets Just Work

Summary

There are a number of tablet laptops available on the market. We should make it so that after the installation of Fedora, they work out of the box without requiring the user to do any additional configuration.

Detailed Description

For tablet-based laptops, we want to ensure that everything works correctly out of the box. This includes:

  • Set up tablet input
  • Set up rotation to be able to easily work
  • Installation of useful applications for tablets (on-screen keyboard, handwriting recognition, xournal?)

Unfortunately, as many of these models will require explicit changes for at least the first if not the first two items, the initial scope of this is going to be restricted a bit. The first target laptop for this to work with is the Thinkpad X60T. This will be followed with other Thinkpad tablets, other Wacom based tablets (Fujitsu come to mind) and then other more different models.

Benefit to Fedora

Improved hardware support is always a plus!

Scope

Will require some changes to hal, X and linuxwacom to get appropriate detection and setup automatically. Rotation is probably gnome-settings-daemon (and the relevant KDE?). Installation is just going to be some comps changes

Test Plan

Do an install (or boot the livecd) on relevant laptops.

User Experience

Things work!

Dependencies

Contingency Plan

If things don't work, we don't pull in the changes.
