About Fedora Zine

So what are zines exactly?

A zine is an original, self-published mini-magazine that is intended for small circulation. Zines are intended for niche interest groups and communicate that interest through artistic expression. For centuries, zines have been aiding creative movements and artistic expressions all around the world.

Fedora Zine

The Design team is working on creating a Fedora Zine to recognize the amazing work done by everyone here in the Fedora Project. The zine will serve as a guide to future contributors as a sneak-peek into what Fedora is all about and what kind of work we do. It’s also a fun way for Fedorans to express and showcase their creativity. The zine will be distributed at conferences and events, and a downloadable copy will also be available.

How to get involved

Become a member of Fedora Zine community by following these steps:

Create a FAS account

Create a Fedora Account System account and sign the Fedora Project Contributor Agreement. Do this through the Fedora Account System.

Subscribe to Fedora Design mailing list

Log into the Fedora mailing lists site at lists.fedoraproject.org using your FAS account credentials. Then, find the Fedora Design team mailing list and subscribe using your personal email address. Do not use the @fedoraproject.org alias, as you are unable to send email from the address.

News, updates, and discussion are shared through on the mailing list. It is a key part of how we communicate. It receives low to medium traffic.

Post a self-introduction

Say hello and introduce yourself to the team! Post a self-introduction to the mailing list and tell us a little about yourself.

• If you’re involved with other things in Fedora, what are/were you working on?

Register on Community Blog

The Fedora Community Blog is an important place for sharing news in the Fedora community. An account gives permissions to view article drafts and previews before they are published. If you ever write an article, you need an account. To register, log in at the login page with your Fedora Account System (FAS) credentials.

Join our IRC/Telegram chat

Fedora uses the Freenode IRC network and Telegram for instant messaging and communication. You can use the messaging client of your choice, as the IRC channel and Telegram group are bridged together. Short discussions and planning happen in our group chat.

Never used IRC before? See the Beginner’s Guide to IRC on the Fedora Magazine. Additionally, you can connect temporarily in a chat session in your browser via Freenode web chat. However, if you want to stay connected even when you are not online, consider using Riot as your IRC client.

The IRC channel is also bridged to a Telegram group, @fedoradesign. Join the group at t.me/fedoradesign.

Make your submission

1. Go to Fedora Zine on Pagure.
2. Open a 'new issue'
3. Upload your submission/s
4. Remember to add a title to each submission ('Untitled' is a title, too)

What we are looking for

We would love to include all creative endeavors of our fellow Fedorans!

Ideas of what to submit:

• Traditional art (paintings, photographs of traditional sculptures, drawings, sketches etc.)
• Digital Art (3d renderings, pixel art, digital illustration etc.)
• Photographs (artistic, scenery etc.)
• Text submissions (poetry, stories, recipes etc.)
• Animals of Fedora: Pictures of pets of Fedora Contributors
• Infographics which highlight the accomplishments of mindshare teams in Fedora
• Full zine pages / two-page spreads (For full page submissions please read the additional guidelines)

Please note:

• This publication is intended to be artistic in nature. As much as we all love group photos from various Fedora events, they are generally not represented in the Zine. (Photos edited in a creative way may be included).
• When submitting artwork or pages to the zine, you give your permission to have the art remixed, edited or adapted to fit the zine aesthetic.

Technical Requirements

All submissions or contributions:

• Must be covered by the Contributor License Agreement. We cannot accept contributions from individuals who have not signed the CLA in the Fedora Account System. The CLA allows us to properly license artwork submissions for distribution with Fedora and other Fedora projects.
• Must not contain material that violates or infringes another's rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement. If your submissions include or derive from artwork created by other people, please make sure the license of the original work you incorporate is compatible with Fedora and that you are not violating any of the provisions of its license. Just because a work is licensed with a Creative Commons license does not mean it is free to use (make sure you provide attribution to artists that license their work with a CC Attribution clause.)
• Should have the consent and approval of the author or creator
• Are thereby licensed to the public for reuse under CC-BY-SA unless specifically identified as being licensed by another approved liberal open source license. See a list of approved licenses for Fedora.

Subject matter:

• Must not contain brand names or trademarks of any kind
• Must not contain material that is inappropriate, offensive, indecent, obscene, hateful, tortuous, defamatory, slanderous or libellous
  • No sexually explicit or provocative subject matter
  • No images of weapons or violent imagery
  • No alcohol, smoking, or drug use imagery
• Must not contain material that promotes bigotry, racism, hatred or harm against any group or individual or promotes discrimination based on race, gender, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age
• Must not contain material that is unlawful, in violation of or contrary to the laws or regulations in the jurisdiction where the work is created
• No religious, political, or nationalist imagery (including flags)
• No images of hats, particularly fedoras. (This is a matter of respect for our primary sponsor, Red Hat, Inc., and is not negotiable. Of course, passive appearance of hats, such as those upon heads in a crowd, may be allowed.)
• Should not contain images of captive or mistreated animals

Technical requirements:

• Must use a format that can be read by software available in Fedora Package Collection. Preferred image formats include SVG and PNG. Master files, which may be further edited, should be maintained in non-lossy formats. Preserving vector graphics, raster layers, and channels are important for such materials.
• Photographic submissions should be made at the highest resolution the camera is capable of.
• No watermarks, signatures, photographer/creator names, or messages may be included in any part of the work. However, if the license allows, and the photo is compelling enough, we could remove watermarks.

Full Page Submissions

For full page submissions please use the following template:

Important notes for full-page submissions:

• The zine pages will be printed in 8.5"×5.5".
• The zine bleed template includes the required 0.25" of bleed and 0.5" of margins/padding (full file size 8.75"×5.75").
• Green - The content you do not want to be lost in print trimming and binding, especially text, must be placed in the green area.
• Red / Blue - Backgrounds should be placed over the entire template, including the bleed area (red) and margins (blue).
• Please submit at 300 dpi.
• The preferred file format for full-page submissions are .PDF and .SVG formats.
• For two-page spreads please create two separate files, one per page.
