Transport
General information
Transport for Ireland / Bus Eireann operate the public bus system in Cork City. City bus services can be identified with the format 2XX
(e.g. 214, 208).
- Real-time transport information
- Buying tickets for city buses
As a visitor, you can buy a Single Journey ticket directly from the bus driver. Ticket purchases are cash only. You cannot use credit/debit cards to buy your ticket. There are no multi-day or multi-journey tickets available for city buses outside of Dublin.
It is recommended to have coins available to pay your fare, but bus drivers will accept 5 EUR or 10 EUR notes --- anything higher than this amount and the driver may not be able to give you change back.
Single Journey tickets are valid only on the service they are purchased on. For example: if your journey involves taking a connecting bus, you will have to buy two tickets (one on each bus).
- Withdrawing cash
ATMs operated by the main banks in Ireland (AIB, Bank of Ireland, and permanent TSB) can be found around the city. They allow withdrawals from Visa, Mastercard, Visa Electron, Maestro, and American Express cards with no extra fees.
Alternative ATM networks (e.g. Euronet) can be found inside some convenience stores and supermarkets, but they tend to charge additional service fees so are not recommended.
- Accessibility information
All city bus services are wheelchair accessible, including ample space onboard and ramps.
- People say "thanks" when getting off the bus. What's this about?
It's customary in Ireland to show gratitude to the driver for getting you to your destination safely. A simple "thanks", "cheers", or "go raibh maith agat" accompanied by a nod and smile is always appreciated!
Getting to Cork City
- From Dublin Airport (DUB)
Dublin Airport is connected exclusively by bus. Private bus services operate from T1 and T2 directly to Cork City. It's possible to take a train from Dublin to Cork City, but requires a bus connection from Dublin Airport to Heuston Station.
Option 1 (Bus) | Take either the Aircoach (book online) or GoBus (book online) from T1 or T2. Adult return tickets for either service cost roughly 30 EUR. Journey duration is roughly 2:30hrs. |
---|---|
Option 2 (Train) | The national rail provider in Ireland is Irish Rail (book online). Its recommended to book your train tickets online in advance and collect them at a ticket kiosk as booking desks may not be staffed. The journey is from Dublin Heuston - Cork Kent station and is between 2h 36m and 2h 45m, depending on which service you take and the fare is approx 45 - 65 EUR return.
You will then need to take a bus/taxi from Kent Station to the conference centre. Taxi ranks are outside the station building and bus routes can be planned by using the Transport for Ireland link. |
- From Cork Airport (ORK)
Public transport and taxi connections are available at the entrance/exit to Cork Airport. The 225 and 226 bus services both arrive in Cork City. The taxi journey will cost roughly 20 EUR.
- From Shannon Airport (SNN)

It was also the research and teaching home of George Boole, the father of Boolean Algebra, who was a professor of mathematics at UCC. A bust of George Boole is located in the centre of Main Campus.
