The Mana World

File:Games manaworld ss manaworld03.jpg A free open source 2D MMORPG in development!

The Mana World (TMW) is a serious effort to create an innovative free and open source MMORPG. TMW uses 2D graphics (like those old-fashioned 2D RPG games such as those released for the SNES / Super Famicom in the early 90's), and aims to create a large and diverse interactive world. It aims to be a unique place for people to interact by not only fighting but also forming a community, a microcosm inside the game.

General Information

  • Name: manaworld
  • Official URL: http://www.themanaworld.org
  • Type: Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG)
  • Repository: Fedora Extras
  • License: GPL
  • Download Size: Approximately 3MB
  • Installed Size: 3.5MB

Installing and Running

The Mana World is available under the Fedora Extras Community repository, and can be installed using the yum tool. To install, either use a front-end tool (like yumex) or issue the following command in a terminal as root:

yum install tmw

This will grab the game and all its dependencies from the Internet, so you need to be connected to the Internet. After installing, you can run the program under the menu:

Applications -> Games -> The Mana World

Or press ALT+F2 on your desktop (or go to a terminal like gnome-terminal and konsole), type tmw, and press Enter.

Game Options

Some extra options for gameplay are available within the command-line method. You can execute these options with tmw --option, where option is one of the following:

  • --skipupdate - Skip the update process (including the download of some text files) and go directly to login screen
  • --username <username> - Login with this <username>
  • --password <password> - Login with this <password>
  • --default Bypass the login process with default settings (It will choose the default server and character automatically)

Gameplay

This game requires that you must stay connected to the Internet, as it is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG). The Mana World aims to be a unique place for people to interact by not only fighting but also forming a community, a microcosm inside the game. Although the game is dynamic and does not have a linear story, it should include background story such as countries, tribes, culture, climate, etc. Quests should lead to other quests. Quests should also encourage forming groups/parties so as to promote the community feel.

Once connected to the server after the login screen, you must create a character to play. It will be your avatar: a person who you control, your identity on the online world. While creating, just choose a name, hair color and hair style. After your character is created, you can choose him and play at the online world.

While playing, you will encounter other players too. There are also NPC (Non-Playable Characters) that provides information, guidance, and some of them even asks for your help (quests). You can move your character by clicking with your mouse's left-button in the direction (or using the arrow keyboard keys). Clicking on a NPC will make you talk with him/her, clicking on an enemy will attack them.

The basic gameplay is simple as every RPG: you must slay enemies (monsters), get items that fall from them, talk to as many people as possible to search for quests, complete this quests, explore. When you kill monsters, you gain experience and job points. These can be used to develop your character stronger and get skills. Some monsters are too strong for the beginner, so you must develop your character and get new weapons to be able to slay them.

The items you grab or buy will go to the inventory. If it's an armor or weapon, it can be equiped from the inventory too. As you gain more experience and levels, you can upgrade your basic skills in the Skills Window. The Stats (Profile) Window also tells you how are your character's attributes (like strength, agility, vitality, intelligence, dexterity, and luck) and status (life, mana, job level, experience). Use the buttons on the Up-Right menu in-game.

The Online World

There are many aspects in this online world. As it is still in development, they aren't all completed. However, there's a official Wiki portal devoted to these informations, provided by the game authors. The wiki can be found on:

Some useful pages for reference while playing the game:

Community

Players and the community can be found on the The Mana World Forums and at the #themanaworld IRC channel under irc.themanaworld.org.

Tips

  • There's a girl near the Cassino under the desert town that heals all your wounds until you're level 10. It's a good help for beginners and to improve your initial level and skills.
  • Killing monsters can give you monster points that you can trade for items on desert's town market.
  • Talking to some people will take you to other places in the The Mana World.
  • There's a cave in the middle of the forest that is good and easy to gain experience.
  • Always try to do quests that NPCs provide you. You can gain some good items from it.
