Provide a live DVD with a show case of games from Fedora.

Detailed Description

The spin is intended to be based off the live desktop spin. There is not room on a DVD for all of the games in Fedora. The intention is to try to include the best games from various genres and possibly cut a few items from the desktop spin.

Benefit to Fedora

I think a games spin is more likely to get people to try it out than most other spins. As such it makes it a nice candidate for being handed out at events focusing on introducing people to Fedora. While the games are not going to be impressive for hard core gamers, there is a nice variety that is likely to have something of interest for most people. A liveusb based on the spin could be even better as that allows people to play their games on other people's computers while keeping their saved games and high score lists with them.

Kickstart File

ISO Name / FS Label

Dependencies

  • The x86_64 spin was enough larger than the i686 spin that it didn't fit in 4 GiB. This needs to be investigated. Currently wine is brought in and this pulls in a bunch of i386 libaries which will make the x86_64 spin larger. My plan is to remove wine and test how that affects the i686 and x86_64 spin sizes. Removing wine has made the x86_64 and i686 spins very close in size. I expect to be committing an updated kickstart file soon.
  • The games spin iso image will be limited to 4 GiB. Currently that is acheived by cutting Openarena. Alternatives should be at least looked at here. I don't want to cut addons with music (and the like) for included games. I'd rather have fewer better games. One approach is to build a version on top of the live base instead of live desktop to see which packages are added by the desktop, but not needed to support any of the games.
  • There is a bug (475925) in Nethack that should get fixed.
  • There is a bug (476369) in the solar plugin that should get fixed.

Scope / Testing

  • We will include many games that are not installed by default in the desktop spin. Since the total set of games will not fit on a single DVD, we will try to include the more polished games available, including those that require 3D graphics support and network play.
  • All specifically included games (which need to be listed here) need to be tested to make sure they are playable.
  • Sound and music should work for games that provide it.
  • Be sure to test network play for games that support it using livedvd networking.
  • Do at least some testing of 3D games to make sure they work. Getting good hardware coverage may be difficult.
