Warning.png
These guidelines are currently in a draft status. Proceed with caution. Please send any questions or concerns to Fedora Legal.

These are the official brand and logo usage guidelines for Fedora. Usage of Fedora and related logos must follow the guidelines as specified below. All uses must also comply with the official trademark guidelines.

Obtaining the logos

Important.png
Do not use the images on this page
The images on this page are not licensed for reuse as fedora trademarks. Please obtain copies of Fedora-related logos as instructed below, and follow all applicable guidelines set out on this page and in the official trademark guidelines.

The Fedora Logos

Fedora logos include:

  • the Fedora logo
  • the Fedora remix logos
  • the Fedora foundations logos
  • the FUDcon logos

You have two main options for obtaining the Fedora logo:

Obtaining the Fedora logo to your specifications

If you're not sure how to work with vector format art files and need a bitmap (PNG, JPG, GIF, or even just a PDF) of the Fedora logo, we strongly urge you to instead File a ticket with the Fedora design team so we can provide the logo in the final output format you need. What you should provide in your request:

  • The background on why you need the logo (For collateral? For a conference banner? For a Fedora sub-project's logo? For a magazine ad? For a book cover? etc.) This is so we can understand the context of its usage to better assist you.
  • Your deadline / what date you need the logo by. (Please give us at least a couple weeks if possible!)
  • Where the logo will be displayed: is this for a print item? (We'll use RGB colors, then.) For an on-screen item? (We'll provide print-ready CMYK-color artwork, then.)
  • What are your design specifications? For example, do you need a particular file format? What dimensions (height x width) in what units do you need the artwork in?
  • Anything else you think we should know about how you intend to use the logo

Obtaining the Fedora logo for use by graphic designers

We also have vector format Fedora logos available for use by professional graphic designers. In order to obtain properly-licensed copies of these Fedora logos, you must send a request to the logo queue at logo@fedoraproject.org. Please include a brief description of the way(s) you plan on using the logo. Is it for a book cover? For a conference booklet? For an event banner?

Also, please be patient as this queue is run by a human being.

Fedora

About

The Fedora logo symbolizes the Fedora Project and all that it does — the operating system as well as the community that creates it.

Guidelines

Usage of the Fedora logo must follow the common guidelines listed on this page.

If you must use only one color, use the word design logo. Do not use the infinity logo. The logotype should be clearly distinguishable from the background color. Honor the Fedora logo palette when possible, using black or white if necessary.

Permitted logo variants

Foundations

About

The four foundations of freedom, features, friends, and first are the core values of the Fedora community.

The Fedora foundations logos are great to use in collateral promoting the Fedora project. For example, you could produce flyers outlining different aspects of the project categorized under each of the four foundations. In many regions, the Fedora Ambassadors have large banners for display at tradeshows that have the Fedora foundations' logo artwork on them.

You can read more about the four foundations on the Fedora foundations wiki page.

Guidelines

Usage of the Fedora foundations logos must follow the common guidelines listed on this page.

FUDCon

About

The FUDcon logo is used in materials related to the Fedora Users' and Developers Conferences that are held multiple times annually around the world. The FUDcon logo is typically used on banners, T-shirts, signage pointing users to rooms where conference talks are taking place, and other events related to the conference such as 'FUDPub.' When developing materials involving the FUDcon logo, please be aware that folks new to Fedora might not immediately associate FUDcon with Fedora and provide appropriate explanation in the context of the logo's usage.

Guidelines

Typically, we use the name of the city or town in which a FUDcon is located as part of its FUDcon logo. For example, here's some names of past FUDcons:

  • FUDcon Boston
  • FUDcon Toronto
  • FUDcon Berlin
  • FUDcon Zurich
  • FUDcon Santiago

We also have a tradition of developing artwork representative of cultural symbols or landmarks associated with each FUDcon's host city. For example, for FUDcon Tempe, Emily Dirsh developed artwork based on the traditional artwork style of the Hohokam culture which is associated with the area. Please consult with the Fedora Design team on your ideas for other visuals to accompany the logo for your FUDcon event. Please do not augment the FUDcon logo with these visuals without explicit approval from the Fedora Design team.

Please do not display the FUDcon logo immediately next to the Fedora logo or logomark. The two logos are distinct and separate logos and should be treated as such. Please refer to the common guidelines on this page regarding clear space for recommendations on how much minimum space should be present between these logos. Note that you must double the clear space requirements between these two logos as they each have their own clearspace requirements. The clearspace requirements for one will not be sufficient to clear both.

Usage of the FUDcon logos must follow the common guidelines listed on this page.

Common guidelines

These logos are used for many purposes across many different designs, including software applications, web sites, T-shirts, event booth tablecloths and banners, and other printed material. While it may seem as if your change to the logo is minor, the impact of such changes is much more widespread than you might initially think. We seek to have a consistent and recognizable logo that is taken seriously in order to help us fulfil Fedora's mission of leading the advancement of free and open source software and content. Some of our logos are trademarked, and changes made to those logos have serious implications. Please understand the importance of these guidelines.

Trademark Symbol

The 'TM' trademark symbol must always be visible and readable for both the Fedora logomark (infinity symbol) and the Fedora logotype ('fedora' text) in the placements shown in these guidelines. You may not remove or obfuscate either of the TM symbols in the Fedora logo.

Clear space

Our logos need breathing room! This is especially important when our logo is nearby other logos, because we don't want to make it difficult for folks viewing a design to figure out where one logo stops and another begins. (Besides, isn't it rude to stand thisclose to someone else?)

We have defined an 'X' height for each of our logos. See the section of this document that applies to the logo you are working with above to determine the X-height for the logo you are working with. We require at minimum 1/2 of this X-height around any of the Fedora logos, but we recommend very strongly that you maintain a full X-height of space around the logo and advise using a minimum X-height margin around the logo only in extreme cases (for example, a design for a very small object like a pen.)

We've tried to make this requirement fairly easy for you; if you follow the instructions provided here on obtaining vector versions of the logos, each of the logo SVG files has already been given the recommended amount of clear space within the SVG document page boundaries.

See how clear space applies to the main Fedora logo itself, as an example, below:

File:Logo UsageGuidelines logoclearspace.png

File:Logo UsageGuidelines logotypeclearspace.png

File:Logo UsageGuidelines symbolclearspace.png

Do not adjust any of the logos

Don't search for the logos on a search engine and use whatever you find there. There are many unofficial variations on the Fedora logos that are not authorized, are unofficial, and do not respect these guidelines. Please do not use them or spread them further!

When you follow the instructions on obtaining and obtain the logos, please use the SVG files we provide you to create the logo artwork you need. If there is any information in the logo you are working with that needs to be filled in (for example, the 'LOCATION' for a particular FUDcon) please fill it in using the text field in the provided SVG with the correct fonts installed. Instructions on how to use the SVG files are provided further down this page.

If you feel you need to adjust the logos for a particular context not addressed by these guidelines, please discuss this with the Fedora design team at design-team@lists.fedoraproject.org and seek final approval from either Ian Weller or Máirín Duffy (both list members).

Never Switch the Colors

Please don't switch the colors of the logos provided beyond the acceptable color schemes outlined in these guidelines. If you have some special need for a color change that these guidelines do not address, please notify the Fedora design team at design-team@lists.fedoraproject.org.

File:Logo UsageGuidelines logocolorswitch.png

Never Use the Logo on Similarly-Colored Backgrounds

Never use the logo on similarly-colored backgrounds, unless the color is Fedora blue (the lighter one) and the logotype is white. You don't want components of the logo to blend into the background like a chameleon! (That's another distro's mascot. ;-) )

File:Logo UsageGuidelines logobgcolor.png

File:Logo UsageGuidelines logorearrange.png

Never Stray from the Color Palette

File:Logo UsageGuidelines logobadpalette.png

File:Logo UsageGuidelines logodistort.png

Don't attempt to replicate the logos

Please follow the instructions provided here on obtaining the logos and use the SVG files provided to create the logos you need. If there is any information in the logo you are working with that needs to be filled in (for example, the 'LOCATION' for a particular FUDcon) please fill it in using the text field in the provided SVG with the correct fonts installed. Instructions on how to use the SVG files are provided further down this page.

Do not attempt to redraw the logos or otherwise recreate them. This could result in unauthorized logo variations getting spread around, and although we know your intentions are quite good, this will cause problems that are difficult to resolve. Be smart, and use the right logos!

Fonts

We recommend the following complementary fonts to use along with the logos. Both recommended fonts are openly licensed and freely distributable.

Do not use the Bryant2 font in materials related to Fedora. (Bryant2 is the typeface used in the logotype.) It is non-free and cannot be distributed with Fedora. This is due to historical decisions; we'd rather not have a non Free logo in our font, to be honest. There is no need for you to purchase the Bryant2 font, because we will provide you versions of the logo with the correct letter shapes in vector paths so that font is absolutely unnecessary.

Comfortaa

We recommend using Comfortaa as a titling / headline font. Comfortaa may be installed from the Fedora repositories. It can be found in the aajohan-comfortaa-fonts package.

Comfortaa font sample

Cantarell

We recommend using Cantarell as a text / copy font. Cantarell may be installed from the Fedora repositories.

Cantarell font sample

Colors

We keep a single color palette to keep our artwork consistent, whether it is different Fedora materials, Fedora materials on screen, on the web, or on printed materials. Past mistakes have included Fedora DVDs coming out purple (true story!) so please pay attention to these colors, and please always use CMYK colors for professionally-printed collateral and objects such as printed banners, T-shirts, hats, and stickers. Otherwise, your design may well come out purple instead of blue!

Downloadable RGB Fedora Color Palette

Do not use these colors for print! These colors may be used for on-screen items such as web banners, websites, wallpaper artwork, etc.

Fedora-color-palette-RGB.png

Download Fedora RGB Color Palette File (Gimp Palette file format)
  • To install in Gimp: Download the GPL file and move it to the ~/.gimp-2.x/palettes directory in your home directory, where 'x' is probably 6, 7, or 8 depending on your version of Fedora. (You may need to go to Edit > Show Hidden Files in your file browser to see the .gimp-2.x directory.
  • To install in Inkscape: Download the GPL file and move it to the ~/.config/inkscape/palettes directory in your home directory. (You may need to go to Edit > Show Hidden Files in your file browser to see the .config directory.

Using the SVG files

All of the logo files covered in this document are provided in the SVG files we will provide you via the logo@fedoraproject.org email address request system. Starting from the top of this document, we have provided thumbnails with the SVG file name beneath each file name so you'll know which SVG to use to work with the logo of your choice.

You will need a vector graphics editor capable of opening up SVG files in order to work with our logo files. We very strongly recommend the free, open source, and fabulous Inkscape vector graphics editor. It is included in Fedora, and the instructions to install it are simple:

yum install inkscape -y

You may also refer to the Inkscape web site for installation instructions on other systems. It is cross-platform software that runs on a number of different operating systems.

If you're not sure how to use the logo files and need a bitmap (PNG, JPG, GIF, or even just a PDF) of the Fedora logo, we strongly urge you to instead File a ticket with the Fedora design team so we can provide the logo in the final output format you need.
