Beefy Miracle → Spherical Cow → <new name>? Spherical Cow is a <blank>, and so is <new name>.

The link between Beefy Miracle and Spherical Cow was "A beefy miracle is something that has never been observed and so is a spherical cow." The link between Spherical Cow and the new name must be different than that link, and different from any other previous link.

General links automatically rejected
General links such as "is a word" or "is a location", while technically within the scope of the rules, will most certainly be rejected by the Fedora Board. Remember, the goal is to come up with a creative link to Spherical Cow. The following links will also likely be rejected:
  • Names of living people
  • Well-known trademarks
Please try to find a truly original and obscure link!

Naming Schedule

  • Name collection: October 9 through October 16 (23:59:59 UTC)

Name Suggestions

Please read carefully.
The instructions below will help prevent some suggestions from being eliminated early.

How to use this table

  1. Come up with a name idea. Put the name in the first column.
  2. Determine whether it passes the "is-a" test. You must be able to truthfully complete the sentence "Spherical Cow is a <...>, and so is <YOUR_NAME>." The link to the new name cannot be the same as the link from Beefy Miracle to Spherical Cow, nor any other previous link. Mark the link in the appropriate column, such as "type of chemical reaction," "deep-sea organism."
    • Don't choose obvious links, because they usually result in uninteresting names.
    • Don't choose very general names or unclear links.
    • Don't choose names of living people, or well-known trademarks.
    • Do choose obscure links to interesting things, which makes for a better name.
    • Do avoid all previous links wherever possible.
    • Do make sure there are at least a couple of ways to link out of the new name to the next name -- and they must be unique too!
  3. Use Google to search for possible trademark collisions. First search for the term itself along with "+software", and then broaden your search to include "+computer", "+hardware", "+technology", "+IT", and so on. Do not skimp on this step.
    • If you find a collision, it is best to find another name. Names that cause collisions will be eliminated by Red Hat's Legal department and thus waste their time, which is a valuable commodity for Fedora. Help us maximize their effectiveness by weeding out names that are trademarks of other entities, especially those in the IT industry.
    • If the collision is outside the IT/computing market, you can still submit the name but you should note the collision in the "Tested" column, and include a link to the site where the collision was found.
    • If you find no collisions, make that notation in the "Tested" column.
  4. Do not mark the approval columns. These are reserved for the approval authorities such as the Board and Red Hat Legal.

KALIFUMUS Spherical cow is a being popped being. For the last breath, What it should do at last ? Explodes into nothing. When in slaughter house,a person uses a knife to stab the cow,the knife touches the cow, the cow explodes with purple smoke, the person finds nothing but the house is full of purple smoke. So is called as KALIFUMUS. FUMUS is a Latin word which means smoke,Kalium is also a Latin word, too. Currently no one uses the word as trademark so I take a try to.

KALIFalKon Spherical cow is not a simple clockwork which the penguins made, after rounding the clock, the cow dies of a mysterious reason. The Reaper meets it, and listened something interesting. Falcon in purple? Yes. So Reaper uses a dead Falcon for a transformation into a strange creature so is called as KALIFalKon-a phoenix like being. Falcon and Kalium are in public domain, while the story is not.
ENGA Spherical cow is a rounded,4-legged heavy animal, facing its danger, Being popped. How to Change its fate? By anger,Push its enemy away to create new stuff. so is called ENGA (anger). anger is in public domain, I use ENGA because of its pronunciation, And usually spells wrong.
KALYE Spherical cow is a friend of farmers. One day, when a farmer tries to milk it, the milk, Turns to purple instead of white so is called as Purple Milk. However this place requires naming,So I call this as KALYE. Milk is one of the essential for fancy food, also for dealing with hunger when in the first six months, Since you are asking the next version is called 19, I have taken a look in different table to suit a case, KALYE is based with KALIUM, KALYE likes KATE so you are free to use. You can comment it since Simple the better YES,You can take a try with purple themed, cellular looking
KALICRUOR Spherical cow is a rounded, typical cow in vision. One day, When a farmer tries to pop it for collagen in a place, the Blood bleeds purple instead of crimson so is called KALICRUOR. CRUOR means blood, which is in crimson. Latin, in public domain, I think for the professionalism, It is better to take a look like Flora(plants) and Fauna (animals). KALIUM is the true name, the nineteenth element, Easy to remember for its strength in Type-1,balanced cost for different usages.

Steam Boiler Spherical Cow seems to be filled with hig pressured gas. So does it the steam boiler The steam machine is the key of the industrial revolution. It started in the 18th century, but it reached its higher development in the 19th century This name links the present computer´s revolution with the industrial revolution Yes. Steampunk artwork could work.
KALINANANON A Spherical Cow is a rounded, big being with seven usages for us. After somewhen, The cow dies. The white light thinks it has a second chance, and asked What does the cow like, Because it has faced lots of bad cases that, it prefers a human-look like with a pair of 'wings'(seven hands). In the central one, there is a rifle. The rifle needs a name, so is called as KALINANANON. Kalium is one of these easy names to remember on the Periodic Table, it is in public domain. KALI=19,NANA=7 The idea likes SASA(R), When try to name one, Better find a way to pronounce as easy as possible, I'm trying this. Someone can say, next version may start with KASIE ,FingerieuntToadie (Pronunciation only) or other something else Yes, but not recommended. A geometric pattern with heptagons is a possibility, but pattern wallpapers are pretty boring.
Parabolic Potassium A Spherical Cow is shaped nutrition item, and so is Parabolic Potassium Potassium is an element on the Periodic Table, and is not trademarked -- Free to use! It has an atomic number of 19 so it matches perfectly with Fedora 19 We could use this time to transition into using the Periodic Table of Elements for future Fedora releases (F20 could be Calcium and further). This has been discussed on the Advisory Board list in the past but no official decision made yet. Offering as a suggestion to make the transition No; If you disagree please suggest a visual theme.
Spintronic Prism A Spherical Cow is a 3-D object and so is any spintronics in prism form No.

Schrödinger's cat Is a theoretical thought experiment No. This would only make for particularly unpleasant visual themes; I don't think Fedorans like dead kitties.
Maxwell's demon is a theoretical thought experiment Possible confusion with BSD daemon mascot Yes. The idea could lead to abstract imagery representing the heat transfer between particles (see diagram), or it could inspire metaphoric representations of a door / pathway / possibility becoming opened. Could also lead to abstract imagery representing entrophy from chaos.
Crop Circle Is a mysterious round thing found on a farm Yes. See Firefox crop circle - we could do something similar with the Fedora logo as a photomanip.
Welkin Is an English term referring to the Celesital Sphere Yes. Any number of visual representations of the sky or even space could be used with this name.
Prime Rib A Spherical Cow is a well-prepared work of meat & muscle, and so is Prime Rib. (19 is also a prime number.) None found No. Food does not make for good wallpapers.
Elastic Horses Spherical Cow is a good solution for farmers, and so is elastic horses moving in vacuum. None found No. If you disagree please suggest a visual theme.
Conical Frustum A Spherical Cow is a 3D geometric object that is butchered. So is a Conical Frustum. None found Also considered saying they're both "sliced." No. Visual representations of conical frustums are just not visually compelling.

Happy Dragon Spherical Cow is a parade balloon animal. So is Happy Dragon. Only Chinese restaurants found. :)'s_Thanksgiving_Day_Parade (see 1960) Yes. We could probably get some nice abstract patterns inspired by Asian dragon paintings, for example.
Field of Dreams Spherical Cows are balls on a farm. Field of Dreams is for playing with baseballs on a farm It's a movie, it has nothing to do with the computer industry Yes. We could probably do an abstract, dream-like landscape for this one. Please no baseball fields, though.
Yin Yang Spherical Cow is used as metaphor. Yin and Yang are used as metaphor to indicate harmony and interdependence. Some screensavers, backgrounds, icons Yes. A literal ying and yang symbol wouldn't make for a good wallpaper, but the general theme of harmony and interdependence is pretty good fodder for a nice abstract piece.
Somatotropin is an (insane) way of maximizing the meat volume. No.
Armstrong The (Spherical) Cow jumped over the moon, as did Neil Armstrong. Small regional IT shops in places called Armstrong. Sounds like Ångström, and there's this script. No longer (sadly) a living person, so it clears that hurdle. Maybe a nice tribute. Yes, but not recommended. Representations of Mr. Armstrong would be ill-advised but we could do a lunar-themed landscape or abstract piece. We've been there and done that, though.
Taylor A spherical cow is an approximation, and so is a Taylor series. No.
Hadron A spherical cow is a composite particle, and so is a hadron. Yes. We might be able to do some kind of abstract design based on the design of the large hadron collider, or the patterns colliding hadrons create. Some example images.
Newton A spherical cow is an approximation, and so is Newton's method. No.
Halley A spherical cow is an approximation, and so is Halley's method. Yes, but not recommended. We could do a comet-themed design, but we've already done a lot of space-themed designs.
Feduped anaconda Connection is obvious: Anaconda newUI was planned as a Fedora 17 feature, but it has been delayed and now is landing in Fedora 18. In Fedora 19 it should be stable enough and way better than old one. So, let's celebrate this great revolution! More conservative explanation: It's an animal like a cow. No.
Christmassy Halloween spherical cow is a geek joke, and so is Christmassy Halloween No.
Chrononaut Spherical Cow could explain the time travel, and so too the chrononaut Yes. We could design any number of cool steampunk artwork with Chrononaut.

Fermi Spherical Cow is an approximation, so is a Fermi problem No.
Flat Hippo Spherical Cow is a strangely shaped animal, and so is Flat Hippo. None found No.
Sombrero Galaxy Spherical Cow is a container of stars, and so is Sombrero Galaxy. Only Mexican restaurants ;) Yes, but not recommended. Here's a photo of a sombrero galaxy - however, we've had multiple space themes in the past and this would not be fresh or unique.
Gabelstaplerfahrer A German word for Forklift driver. Spherical Cow is a long and awkward name, and so is Gabelstaplerfahrer. No.
Torricelli is supposed to have horns In fact, "Torricelli's trumpet" is also called "Gabriel's horn", but Gabriel is a trademark. See No. Visual representations of Torricelli's trumpet aren't that compelling.

arodef taerg Spherical Cow is a great joke, and so is arodef taerg. it's funny too, it's 'fedora [the] great' in backwards ;-) it's funny, isn't?! None found Absolutely not.
Robust Rutherford Spherical Cow is a funny reference to physics and so "Robust Rutherford"; imagine a grumpy (robust) faced Rutherford. Rutherford was a great person and scientist, and unfortunately he's dead, but his name is not a trademark. And the adjetive "robust" is a great wink for the audience and for us the users, about the quality of this release Like Rutherford is a scientist you (or we, the community) can use different names of different scientists of different science. No.
Flagship Spherical Cow is a metaphor, and so is Flagship Yes. Metaphorically, flagship means the commanding ship and the ship in the lead, which speaks to Fedora's 'First' foundation. We could probably do some kind of abstract piece with an allegory to ordering, showing something in front of others.
Mindstream Spherical Cow is a metaphor, and so is Mindstream Yes. You could probably do something zen / meditation-themed with this, for example, these kind of images.
Nutshell Spherical Cow is a metaphor, and so is Nutshell No.
Desiderata of Happiness Most known poem by American writer Max Ehrmann No.
Gouda Spherical Cow is round and dairy, and so is a wheel of Gouda Beefy Miracle and Spherical Cow were both cheesy names. Let's up the ante. No. Food makes for terrible wallpaper. However, Maybe: Gouda originates from the Netherlands and could have a wallpaper tied to the locale.
Tiddalik Spherical Cow is humorous myth, and so is the thirsty frog Tiddalik Yes. I recommend strongly against depicting the frog itself but the story lends itself to a water-themed background.
Shoryuken Spherical Cow is a Shoryuken, and so is vicodan. "You must defeat my Shoryuken to stand a chance." 昇龍拳 (Japanese) translates to "Rising dragon fist". Do not see it trademarked any where. Checked google and here This doesn't actually follow the rule, try again It's humorous, it's awesome, it's not too nerdy, it's widely used in pop culture, and could have the same excitement as the name Beefy Miracle did. Yes. I suppose we could do something abstract with vertical streams, eg an abstract version of this.
Eyjafjallajökull Spherical Cow is a stupid name for the Linux distribution, Eyjafjallajökull as well., ; I hope that neither of these is any way interchangeable with a Linux distribution Also it could be a celebration of Yes. There's a lot of beauty in Iceland's landscape so we could probably come up with something nice here.
Death Star Spherical Cow is a spherical object in space and so is Death Star. No. First of all, we've had far too many space themes already. Secondly, I think it's of legal concern to visually represent something from Star Wars.
Light bulb Spherical cow is a solution that needs vacuum to work and so is a light bulb. No. A light bulb isn't a visually compelling subject.
Electrical filament Spherical cow is a solution that only works in a vacuum and so is an electrical filament. Yes. We could try for an abstract that has some glowing lines maybe to represent the glow of a powered filament.
Loch Ness Monster A Spherical Cow is an elusive and mythical creature, and so is the Loch Ness Monster. Yes. I recommend against any representation of Nessie herself, but you could probably do something aquatic-themed.
Hypercubic Gnu Bovids with unusual shapes No.
Qilin (also known as kirin) A spherical Cow is mythical creature, so is Qilin Kirin is a popular brand of beer but there are nothing famous or popular IT related. Yes all mythical creatures
higgs boson A spherical Cow is coming from theoretical physicists, so is the Higgs Boson It is not really related to any trademark but it is brand new The Higgs Boson is brand new as is every Fedora release Yes phycist, moleculs, atoms
Honey Badger A still spherical, but slightly less rounded beast named for a substance normally associated with cow milk. Everything fears the honey badger. All other distros should fear Fedora.
