Description

This test case covers basic operation of the GNOME file manager (Nautilus).

Setup

  1. Optional: If you have access to network resources through Kerberos or Active Directory, add an Enterprise Login account as described in Online Accounts test case.

How to test

  1. In GNOME, start Files.
  2. Press F1 to display Help. Open random included articles, verify that they contain instructions for Files.
    • You can consult this help when performing additional tasks in this test case and don't know how to do some action.
  3. Browse directories using the main view and sidebar. Go backward and forward when those actions are available.
    • You should see previews or icons correctly representing contents of files and directories.
  4. Open multiple tabs with different locations.
  5. Try to open a variety of file types. Using the "Open With..." context menu, change the default application for a selected file type.
    • Files should be opened in their associated applications.
    • Application association should change for every file with same file type.
  6. Create, copy, move, delete and rename files and directories.
  7. Try to select multiple files and/or folders.
  8. Search for files and directories, use various keywords and filters.
    • You should always be able to find existing files and directories when using correct keywords and filters.
  9. Switch between icon and list views. Sort files by name, size, type and last modification date, try also reverse order. Toggle "show hidden files" and see if it reveals additional locations in the Home directory.
    • List view should show correct information. Sorting should work as expected.
  10. Try some common settings from the preferences window, to see if they work as expected: "Sort Folders Before Files", "Action to Open Items".
  11. Open file and directory properties, and check that the information looks correct.
  12. Change file and directory permissions.
  13. Connect a removable drive and open it from the sidebar. View available space using the properties. Format the drive by selecting "Format..." from its context menu.
  14. Select some files and directories, compress them, move an archive to a different location and extract them here.
    • Extracted files and directories should be exactly same as originals.
  15. Open the "Recent" menu in the sidebar. You should see recently accessed files sorted by modification date.
  16. If possible, connect to a remote server from the "Other Locations" item in the sidebar.
  17. Perform some additional Exploratory testing.

Expected Results

  1. Every action should have expected result. This should work with local, removable and remote media.
  2. Everything should work also with Kerberos and Active Directory network resources.
  3. Please report all failures to the GNOME tracker.
