This testcase will check whether Tor can communicate with the Tor network and allow Firefox to proxy connections to the Tor SOCKS port.


  1. Ensure the Package-x-generic-16.pngtor and Package-x-generic-16.pngfirefox packages are installed.
  2. The /etc/tor/torrc configuration file should be the default one included with the package.

How to test

  1. In Firefox, browse to
  2. sudo systemctl start tor.service
  3. Configure Firefox to connect to SOCKS proxy:
    1. Open the proxy settings: Edit → Preferences → Advanced → Network → Settings
    2. Select Manual proxy configuration
    3. Select SOCKS v5 connection type
    4. Set SOCKS Host as: localhost
    5. Set SOCKS Port as: 9050
  4. Browse to

Expected Results

  1. The first visit to should say: Sorry. You are not using Tor.
  2. After having started tor and configured Firefox, the second visit to should say: Congratulations. Your browser is configured to use Tor.
