Centralization

Localization

i18n

Alternative names

Internationalization is often abbreviated as I18N (or i18n or I18n), by IBM and others, where the number 18 refers to the number of letters omitted. "Localization" is often abbreviated L10n or l10n in the same manner. (The most common forms are i18n and L10n, respectively. These forms won out because many fonts do not readily distinguish uppercase "I" and lowercase "l", but lowercase "i" and uppercase "L" are always clear.) Both notions are sometimes collectively termed globalization (g11n), but that word has a more common meaning. Also seen in some circles, but less commonly, are "p13n" for personalization, "m17n" for multilingualization, and "r3h" for reach, as in the reach of a website across countries and markets.

FLOSS

The phrase Free/Libre/Open-Source Software, or FLOSS, is an inclusive term designed to be neutral when referring to both free software and open source software.

Often both free software and open software can refer to the same program or source code, but each term represents a differing emphasis on the importance of freedom (free software) or technical progress (open source software).

Swag

Also spelled "shwag" or "schwag"; A slang term for promotional items, usually given away for free. Some people suggest that it is an acronym for stuff we all get.

IANAL

IANAL is a Usenet and chat abbreviation (acronym) for "I am not a lawyer." A similar abbreviation, TINLA, stands for "This is not legal advice." A variant of IANAL is IANYL ("I am not your lawyer"), which is used by lawyers when posting comments on message boards. Other variations of IANAL refer to different fields, such as IANAMD for "I am not a Medical Doctor."

It is an abbreviation for "be back later." It's commonly used in IRC.

Leet

The name Leet generally refers to a linguistic phenomenon associated with the Internet. Leet is defined in terms of the corruption or modification of written text. For example, the term "leet" itself is often written l33t or 1337. The name Leet itself is derived from the word elite. Elite has been used in the past to designate a group of users as belonging to a higher social echelon than other users. Originally, "elite" had been reduced to one syllable, "'leet."
