OSS related work

I am a elected Member of the Fedora Ambassadors Steering Committee and act as the FAmSCo Chair. I dedicated and will still dedicate a large part of my time to the Ambassador Membership Service (AMA), where i guide new Contributors as a sponsor and mentor into the Fedora Project. And my other "everyday" Job is to maintain the ambassador-mailing-list as Administrator. To increase the Quality of the Ambassador Membership Process, i have developed and helped FAmSCo to establish the new approval process. I work on Fedora to bring in or bring back OSS Security Test Applications like dsniff or others along with the Fedora Security Lab, trying new MarketingMaterials producing SWAG for us - or work as PressOfficer for the Fedora EMEA e.V. and help as one of the few Fedora in Library Activists. I initiated a few things which today are essential parts within Fedora Ambassadors, like the AmbassadorPolo or the well known generic Posterdesigns from MairinDuffy. Promoting Fedora on Events is also a major part of a Ambassador and so i work as organizer, driver, helper, slogger, promoter on a lot Events every year, supported by my Company, HIC AG. In the other Hand i work on OpenSource Projects like the LDAP Workgroup BW or the Institute for Security and Open Methodologies

Future plans

  • enhance Fedora´s presence in underrepresented Regions - concrete: a translation marathon in Kyrgyzstan in 2010 and more focus on Africa! On a longterm, turn more and more of the white spaces on the worldmap into blue.
  • improve the Membership and regional Mentoring Process
  • establish better regional Leadership
  • establish measurability not only for Membership also for Success of Events
  • Establish liasons to other subprojects - especally to marketing, artwork and docs!
  • Invent new ways to encourage people to contribute to the Fedora Project

Person

Joerg Simon was born in 1971 in Gera, Thüringen (East-Germany). He lives in Baden-Württemberg with his wife Sabine. His first contact with IT related stuff was in the middle 80's (KC85 ) at School. In the early 90's he joined the German Army for 12 years where he was NCO (Rank E-8) in a data processing unit in the first 4 years and trained and worked in programming on UNIX Mainframe Computers. He changed the unit and attended a UNIX based GIS System (HEROS ) for display location and situation in battle scenarios. During the last 4 years he led the Information Management Department in the same Unit and improved his knowledge in IT Security. At the same time in 1996 he worked with several Linux Distributions to join smaller units on one regional Information System , supported by a colleague and friend (crenz ). After his time in the Army he worked 2 years as an instructor and promoted Linux in several presentations and scripts. During this period he evolved to dedicate a part of his life to the foss world. In 2004 he changed to HIC AG as a Security Consultant. From 2004 to 2006 he joined the ldap workgroup of bwcon:boss to work on new schemes, new concepts and to encourage and enable the ldap interoperapility between different foss projects. Also during that time he joined the Fedora project. Starting with his first FUDCon in 2005, he is contributing to multiple groups in the Fedora Project, where he also serves as the FAmSCo ViceChair. He is one of the founding members of the Fedora EMEA e.V. NPO. His main focus in Fedora today is: the work on Community Development, the Fedora Security Spin, Fedora mailing list and membership administration and working on strong support for Fedora in the former eastern bloc. With his involvement in the OSSTMM, he recently initiated a german localization project and work's on a special customized OSSTMM Security-Live-System based on Fedora.
