Can't make the date?
If you come to this page before or after the test day is completed, your testing is still valuable, and you can use the information on this page to test, file any bugs you find at Bugzilla, and add your results to the results section. If this page is more than a month old when you arrive here, please check the current schedule and see if a similar but more recent Test Day is planned or has already happened.

What to test?[edit]

Today's installment of Fedora Test Day will focus on Better Switchable Graphics Support - for Fedora 25, there are some changes to switchable graphics support and today we will be testing that it works well enough, especially for Wayland on Fedora Workstation.

Who's available[edit]

The following cast of characters will be available testing, workarounds, bug fixes, and general discussion ...

Prerequisite for Test Day[edit]

How to test?[edit]

Using an existing Fedora 25 installation[edit]

Using an existing Fedora 25 install to test is fine, but please ensure you are using the default GNOME session (listed as just 'GNOME' in the login screen session chooser). Please also ensure you have fully updated the system. Ideally, also run dnf --enablerepo=updates-testing update fedora-release* and ensure that fedora-release-25-0.14 or later is installed. After updating the system, please reboot.

Please disable proprietary drivers, if you use them. If you are not sure how to do this, please test with a live image instead.

It may also be a good idea to create a fresh user account for testing, though issues experienced with your regular user account are also of interest.

Live image[edit]

Instead of testing with an installed system, you may download a non-destructive nightly live image for your architecture. Tips on using a live image are available at FedoraLiveCD. Please boot the live image normally without changing kernel parameters etc.

Test Day live image[edit]

There is a special Switchable Test Day live image available. The sha256sum is f7e2cababd8b7b859e413e2de2149637e54355f8a2c2ec9970269c3c54d26fcd. This image provides the necessary bits for the Desktop offload test to work out of the box; with a regular live image, that test will not work correctly.

Warning.png
Old live image version
An older version of the live image was briefly linked here, named Fedora-SwitchTestDay-Live-x86_64-25-20161102.n.0.iso. If you have that version, please discard it and download the new one. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Nightly live image[edit]

You can also use a regular nightly live image, if you already have a recent one to hand or do not want to use the Test Day live image for some reason. Live image links can be found here: please be sure to download a Fedora 25 Workstation nightly. If you use a regular live image, you will not be able to run the Desktop offload test.

Download switchcheck and get your system profile[edit]

For this event we have written a script to gather some information on your system. Before running any tests, please download and run the script.

Note.png
Safety information
The script inspects nothing but your hardware information and whether or not X.org is running, and sends no data out from your system. It is free software and written in Python, so you can easily inspect it before running it if you wish.
  1. Install the script by running, at a console: curl -o /tmp/switchcheck https://pagure.io/fedora-qa/switchcheck/raw/master/f/switchcheck && chmod ugo+x /tmp/switchcheck
  2. Run the script, as a regular user from a terminal in the Workstation desktop: /tmp/switchcheck
    • If it prints an error message with instructions, please follow them.
    • If it prints any other kind of error, please ask for help in IRC.
  3. If you have switchable graphics and the script works correctly, it should display Paste the following line as your 'profile' in the results page:, and then a line of text. That line of text is your profile.

Run the tests[edit]

Visit the result page and click on the column title links to see the tests that need to be run. Follow the instructions there, then enter your results by clicking the Enter result button for the test. In the Profile section, please enter the profile text produced by the switchcheck script. You can add your system's model number before or after the profile text if you like. If you test on multiple systems, please enter a new row of results for each tested system, with the correct profile text for each one.

Note.png
'Power' test
The 'Power' test is only useful on certain hardware configurations. When you run the switchcheck script it should tell you whether or not to run that test: please follow the instruction. Of course, you can run all the other tests!
Note.png
'Intel' tests
Some of the test cases used are pre-existing ones written for Intel graphics Test Days, and so they refer specifically to 'Intel display adapter' and so on. Don't worry if the text seems slightly inaccurate for a hybrid graphics system, we are just re-using the test cases for convenience. Just follow the instructions and disregard inaccurate Intel-specific references.
Note.png
Proprietary driver testing
Testing of switchable graphics with the NVIDIA proprietary driver is not officially covered at this event, but if you can run an installation and want to try it out, you may find this blog post a useful reference. It's not possible to test this from the live image, you will have to do a system install. Please ask in the IRC channel if you run into problems or have questions, and if anyone is around who is familiar with this area they will try to help you.

Commonly encountered issues[edit]

Here are some bugs which have cropped up a few times already:

  • #1356115 - Some Macbook models with outputs connected to the secondary GPU show graphical glitches on boot and crash on suspend

Reporting bugs[edit]

If you have problems with any of the tests, check the list of commonly-encountered issues above and the bugs reported by other testers on the results page. If you see a report that looks the same, add a comment with any useful information you can add.

If you don't find an existing report, report a new bug to Bugzilla. The appropriate component will depend greatly on the nature of the bug. If it seems to be a fundamental hardware support issue, please file the bug on the kernel. If it seems to be more to do with GNOME integration, likely components are mutter, gnome-shell, and gnome-control-center. Please ask in IRC if you encountered an issue but are not sure where to report it. Please include in the bug report:

  1. The output of lshw -c display or lspci -nn
  2. The output of xrandr --listproviders
  3. The output of journalctl -b (you can run journalctl -b > /tmp/journal and then attach /tmp/journal to the bug)
  4. The output of sudo dmidecode (again, you can run sudo dmidecode > /tmp/dmidecode and attach /tmp/dmidecode to the bug)

If you encounter a crash, you should be able to use the ABRT system to file a high-quality bug report. Run gnome-abrt - 'Problem Reporting' in the overview - look for the crash in the list you see, and click the Report button.

  6. Brightness hotkeys are (known broken), likely https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=81762. While suspend/resume works fine, GNOME displays management seems broken (hence FAILED). Upon connection of HDMI port (wired to dGPU), the laptop display turned off (confirmed in Displays). After changing it to Primary/Secondary, it reverted to Mirror after suspend/resume (can be reproduced every time). Changing from mirror->primary for one monitor is insufficient, had to change the other screen from secondary->off->secondary to have something other than "mirror". glxgears on both screens work though.

  1. After logging in there is an unknown display in the display manager without(!) an attached monitor connected. I can even move windows to it by moving them to right side of the laptop display, but cannot see them because of the lack of a display. But I can still interact with the windows.
  2. Almost everything worked perfectly. Maximizing the glxgears window to the left or right side of the screen resulted in a fps drop to ~40 fps. Maximizing the glxgears window to the top so that almost the full screen is occupated by the window resulted in a fps drop to ~30 fps and clearly visible tearing.
  3. external display connected via hdmi: suspend and resume functioned but after adjusting the brightness via the gnome panel the system froze (not reproducible). At the attempt to repdroduce the error, the internal, external and unknown display got mirrored to 1024*768 @60Hz (biggest common denominator). After multiple hours of suspending, the configurations of the external connected monitor and the native display got confused after resuming (both presenting again 1024*768 @60Hz). The reconfiguration via the gnome display manager every time after the mirroring was a PITA btw. external display connected via VGA: Suspend and resume functioned properly. Suspend and resume functioned properly without external monitors connected.

  3. nitpick: when changing the back light in the system menu by dragging the slider using the mouse, the knob trails the mouse. It is visually displeasing (in my opinion). I would suggest to let the knob track the mouse and let the blue background/bar track the actual back light.
  4. At first, after hot plugging a VGA CRT monitor, the monitor was not detected correctly (wrong maximum resolution, barely readable). A reboot corrected the situation. I did not try disconnecting and reconnecting the monitor. I cannot reproduce the problem anymore.

  1. Lenovo ThinkPad P50 with two external monitors connected via docking station (1 on DVI port and 1 on HDMI port). Note that with F24 I have to connect external monitors to the laptop ports (not docking station) and select "discrete graphics" (as opposed to "hybrid graphics" which is enabled for this test) in BIOS in order for the external monitors to be consistently detected and detected as two separate external monitors instead of one. In this configuration for F24, I am able to use both external monitors as well as the built-in laptop display for a three-screen setup. For this test, I connected the monitors through the docking station, hoping the detection issue might be fixed. Both monitors came up, but they are detected as a single device and both display the same output. I ran the test in this configuration, so I don't know if I should submit a bug report, or if this is not considered a supported configuration. Test results: 1) Closed lid. External displays went dark. 2) Several seconds later, with lid still closed, external displays came on at 1400 x 1050 resolution, 74 Hz (native 1920 x 1200, which was the setting prior to closing lid). I believe the display settings showed "lid closed" for the built-in display. 3) Opened lid. External monitors change back to 1920 x 1280, but laptop display is off, and shows "off" in display settings. Built-in display was on at native 1920 x 1080 before closing lid. 4) Tested keyboard backlight keys per test procedure. They work after suspend as they did before suspend. 5) Turned on built-in display via settings. Came up, but with arrangement swapped (built-in was on left before closing lid; now on right). 6) Changed arrangement via settings. This caused built-in and external monitor resolution to change to 1400 x 1050 and went to "Mirror" mode with all three displays showing the same output. Refresh rate of built-in display shown as 59 Hz. External shown as 74 Hz. 7) Attempted to change external monitor(s) to primary. Still remained in "Mirror" mode at 1400 x 1050, and this is shown as the max available resolution for both built-in and external monitors in the settings dialog. At this point, I didn't record every step because nothing seemed to be working. At one point, I selected the built-in monitor as secondary and the option for 1920 x 1280 appeared again. Able to successfully select built-in as secondary if I keep 1400 x 1050, but if I try to select as secondary at native resolution, or if I try to arrange displays after selecting built-in as secondary at 1400 x 1050, it drops back to mirror mode with all three displays at 1400 x 1050. Attempting to change resolution of external display(s) also results in dropping back to mirror mode at 1400 x 1050. Was able to get back to native resolution on built-in display at one point, but attempting to get external monitors back to native resolution resulted in mirror mode at 1400 x 1050 again. So far, I have found no way to recover all displays to native resolution in the proper arrangement through the display settings interface. If it would be appropriate, I can submit a bug report for this with the output of the commands requested for bug reports. I attempted to include the output in this comment, but got "There was an error when saving the result (Malformed JSON data (HTTP 400))" when trying to submit.
