P.I.W.O. first began in 2004 as a joint initiative of the BooBoo Student Association at the Poznań University of Technology (PUT), and the Poznań branch of the Polish Linux User Group. Between 2004 and 2018 the event was organized by various student organisations and other groups associated with PUT.
After a long break, in 2025 the conference was revived by members of Knyfyrtel Hackerspace Poznań — the city's newly-formed hacker community. The event was a huge success, featuring two talk tracks and attracting almost 200 attendees.
For 2026, the XV edition is organized in cooperation with the WeBrains Student Association at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (AMU) and the Linux Academic Group Student Association at the Poznań University of Technology (PUT). This edition's posed to be the biggest one yet, with the organizers aiming to provide 3 lecture tracks, 2 workshop tracks and a LAN party / gaming track.
