Fedora Fonts

Font projects listed there have shown some capacity to welcome external contributions:

  1. willingness to accept patches,
  2. clear release process, with regular versioned archives on public forums,
  3. releases in free/libre patch-friendly source formats (fontforge, xgridfit…),
  4. clear licensing,
  5. mailing list or author address the patches can be sent to,
  6. makefile that automates the font build process for newcomers (and that works well enough to be used by the Fedora package),
  7. IRC channel to tutor contributors,
  8. VCS to record font changes and contributions,
  9. issue tracker to manage problem reports

The DejaVu project remains the recommended first stop for would-be font creators. It has shown an impressive capacity to process contributions from many different horizons, and trained many new font creators (the current projects leads knew nothing about fonts before getting on board). Of all the projects listed there, it's probably the only one with a perfect contributor-friendly setup.

Even if you've been in art school, it is highly recommended to spend some time with a successful free/libre project like DejaVu to learn about font project management.
