Why do you want to work with the Fedora Project?

Fedora has always been one of my main references in the Open Source world, since I started using it, back to Fedora 13 “Goddard”. The reasons for this were mainly my curiosity/will to learn about computers and my tiredness of Windows. Since then I haven’t stopped learning more about computing and Fedora remains my main operating system.

In Fedora, and in the Open Source world in general, contributors are helping to develop an idea/software that will be used by millions of people worldwide, with different needs and “tastes”, which can be a pretty big and hard task. However, with the help of an enormous community (and much hard work), those projects get done and, very often, they will be much better than their “paid equivalent”.

Regardless of how much effort everyone put into the project, and how much time they spent on it, everything will be free of charge. That’s why I want to work with Fedora Project: I want to help build tools for everyone, not seeking praise or fame, but trying to help. I don’t want to be rich, I want everyone be able to afford a computer with powerful but user friendly tools.

Did you participate with the past GSoC programs, if so which years, which organizations?

No, unfortunately I haven’t participated in any of the previous editions of Google Summer of Code.

Will you continue contributing/ supporting the Fedora project after the GSoC 2013 program, if yes, which team(s), you are interested with?

Definitely. That’s one of my main goals in participating in GSoC. I would certainly love to contribute to Open Source projects, as they guarantee us freedom and liberty while using computers. Besides, I would get the feeling I am helping others and contributing to make the world a better place.

I would like to contribute to the further development of the project I am currently interested in participating: Dorrie. I foresee this project will have much success, as it will allow most users, even the ones without technical knowledge to customize their OS – which is one of the mains goals of open source software: you are able to change it and redistribute it.

Besides, I would also like to contribute to other Fedora’s tools and help make it more user friendly. For example, I would like to work on a Software Center for Fedora, much like Ubuntu’s Software Center, as it will attract more users.

Why should we choose you over other applicants?

I fulfill the necessary knowledge prerequisites:

1. I am familiar with Python and I have done some projects with it. I am also familiar with HTML, Javascript and a little bit of SQL.

2. Despite I haven’t worked with Django before, I have worked with Google AppEngine and I have some experience building websites. As for example, I leave the following wiki, which is not yet fully finished: http://telmo-wiki.appspot.com.

Besides, I am proficient with C and I have knowledge of algorithms and data structures. I would also like to add that I was one of the creators and I am currently one of the responsible for the student’s web server in my university residence (Colégio Pio XII - http://www.colegiopio12.com/).

As a final point, although I have never participated in an Open Source Project, I believe I have what it takes to complete the task. I have a great capacity for work, as you may be able to guess after reading my CV. I would also like to point that I am known for being an autodidact – I usually spend my time reading about things of my interest. Besides, if I want to work in an Open Source Project, I have to start somewhere, and I think this is a great opportunity.
