2D Convivial Mass Murder Game!

War has been declared! Battle your favorite free software mascots in the Wormux arena. With big sticks of dynamite, grenades, baseball bats, and bazookas, you can exterminate your opponent in a 2D cartoon style scenery. The goal of the game is to destroy all of your opponents' mascots.

Installing and Running

Wormux is available under the Fedora Extras Community repository, and can be installed using the yum tool. To install, either use a front-end tool (like yumex) or issue the following command in a terminal as root:

yum install wormux

This will grab the game and all its dependencies from the Internet, so you need to be connected to the Internet. After installing, you can run the program under the menu:

Applications -> Games -> wormux

Or press ALT+F2 on your desktop (or go to a terminal like gnome-terminal and konsole), type wormux, and press Enter.

Configuration

Configuration is done in-game. The default configuration should be fine for most modern systems. If you wish to tweak your game settings, run the game and choose the Options menu. There you can configure a number of game options like: duration of a turn, duration of the end of a turn, number of players per team, initial energy; sound options (quality, toggling music and sounds on/off), and graphic options (resolution size, maximum fps (frames per second), toggle fullscreen mode on/off, and display of wind particles, player energy, and player's name).

The configuration file for these options can be found in $HOME/.wormux/config.xml (where $HOME is your user's directory), however you don't need to do anything with this file since it's always updated from the game itself.

Gameplay

Wormux can only be played locally (on the same PC) with one or more players. Each player controls the team of his/her choice and must destroy his adversary using more or less casual weapons. Although a minimum of strategy is required to vanquish, Wormux is pre-eminently a "convivial mass murder" game where, turn by turn, each member of each team attempts to produce a maximum of damage to his opponents.

Once you run the game, press play and choose your teams by selecting them in the up-left box and putting into the up-right box. Each team represents a player. Then choose a map to play with these teams. Currently there are 16 teams and 25 maps available for pure fun and play!

When the game begins, you have 60 seconds (which is the default configuration) to move your team member and use weapons/accessories to destroy the other team. You can move the team member with the keyboard arrow keys, and select the weapon/accessory with the right-click mouse button. Each weapon has its unique features, so try experimenting with them! The game ends when a team is completely destroyed.

Game Controls

You can move the team member with the kayboard arrow keys, and display weapon/accessory board with the right-click mouse button (selecting with left-click button press). Move the mouse next to screen borders to move around the map. Also, these keyboard keys are available:

F1-F5 - Switch between First to Fifth column's weapons/accessories
TAB - Switch between Team Members
C - Center display to the active team member
ENTER - Horizontal Jump
BACKSPACE - Vertical Jump
SPACE - Shoot (Hold it to get more power)
F9 - Enable or disable bottom bar
P - Pause Game
ESC - Quit Game

Hints and Tips

The game requires you totally annihilate all your oppositions characters, using the weapons at your disposal. There are plenty of weapons, but of note are the following: grenades, cluster bombs, holy grenade, rope, air strike and the bazooka.

The basic, and unlimited ammo, weapons are the grenades and bazooka, as well as a few small arms, such as shotgun. The most effective of these unlimited weapons is the bazooka. With this you have power, and high kill points, but it is unstable, as it is reliant on the wind. A tip here is to aim according to the wind, and bear in mind if the wind blows heavily in the same direction as you are shooting, aim in the opposite direction you wish the round to go. The wind will radically alter the trajectory, so be warned!! Close-range use of this weapon is possible, but if you are too close you too get the backlash and thus points injury.

The cluster bombs are useful for wide area dispersal. A mortar round is unpredictable, and in situations where you have a small opening leading into say, a large cavern, and require the contents of said cavern deceased, a well aimed cluster bomb will be of use. And since grenades work in the same way, these too can be used, and are unlimited. These two weapons have a timed function, once thrown, they have 3 seconds before detonation, which is handy for getting it into small places for big damage. The cluster bomb will explode into smaller bombs, like mortar rounds do. The grenade explodes as one impact. Choose wisely dependent on damage needed, and also on the area and layout of the troops, as you have a few cluster bombs. Conventional weapons may be in order here.

The holy grenade. Let that sink in a minute. This is the Weapon of Mass Destruction you have been looking for. This weapon has the highest kill power, and can knock dead an opponent on a direct hit. It works in the same way as the cluster bombs and grenades do. Chuck it, and in 3 seconds you will hear "Hallelujah". Watch. And Enjoy.

Most weapons, except small arms, are dependent on weather conditions, and in particular, wind. If the wind is strong, compensate. This i cannot emphasise enough. After all you do not wish a holy grenade to strike the heart of your base camp...Trust me. Air strikes may be powerful, but can be friendly fire in a heartbeat, if the wind changes. Be careful. Also a good little tool is rope. This can be used to move up and out of danger zones, to collect weapons and ammo, and also to collect health bonuses.
