OLS (Ottawa Linux Symposium)

JesseKeating points out in his blog[1] ,

"This tutorial will cover the tools that Fedora uses to make releases, both the choose your own adventure CD/DVD release and the various Live images. We'll explore some of the underlying technologies and tools and why things are done the way they are. Hopefully at the end of the tutorial people will be confident in making their own "spin" of Fedora, or something based on Fedora. A good time should be had by all."

Fluendo, Bastien, et al

KarstenWade points out in his blog[1] ,

"Even though it is rather late to try fixing this situation, that doesn’t mean a good enough solution can’t be worked up. There are updates to packages, maybe even a zero-day fix, if we can’t get better changes to ship with Fedora 9. Rather than asking the Board to “reverse its decision”, please join us on fedora-advisory-board to figure out what is the right thing to do."

Desktop User Guide (Needs help to finish it off)

MarcWiriadisastra points out in his blog[1] ,

"The link is above if you are wondering what I'm on about. With recent changes on how to contribute this is your opportunity to get in with a lower barrier. Join up with the docs group or just message me I'm more than happy to walk you through getting involved."

OpenExpo 2008 - Day 2

FabianAffolter points out in his blog[1] ,

"The second day started as busy as the first one. I guess this was basically because the talk of Alan was the first one of the day. Everybody wanted to listen to his talk. 20 min before he started most seats in the room were already occupied. 10 min before the start there was no more standing room. 5 min later there was a 2 m long queue in front of the door. For us this was perfect because our booth was not far away from the door and so were able to grab all visitors who haven't found a seat."

Rename cvsextras during FAS2 switch?

WarrenTogami writes[1] on fedora-infrastructure-list,

Warren proposed that during the move to FAS2, we rename cvsextras as packager as this is a good opportunity to do so as everything will be down anyway. However in the end since no one claimed the ownership of this task it did not get done.

another issue to fix with the FAS2 switch: Kojis ssl certificate

TillMaas writes[2] on fedora-infrastructure-list,

Because of the switch to FAS2 everyone will need to change their passwords any how, therefore this is a good chance to deploy the new koji certificate the ticket[3] for which is open for 7 months now. Dennis commented that this should not be done because it will break user certs. At the end of the thread MikeMcGrath commented that this involves a lot of work and has a high potential for breakage and annoyance for everyone and the benefit to most people is not clear.

FAS2 ships!

MikeMcGrath reports[4] on fedora-infrastructure-list,

FAS2 has gone online now. Mike made a note that if your user gets deleted or removed from a group your home directory may get removed (moved to /tmp/fedora until tmpwatch gets it) This may have happened to your home directory during the migration.

Sulfuric Waves

With the deadline for theming Round 3, more and more pieces of the Waves theme[4] fall into place in a polished state: GRUB splash[1] , RHGB[2] , Firstboot[3] .

Admission policy in the FAS2 Art group

With the migration to the new Account System[3] we can mange easily the accounts and groups, so MairinDuffy notices a large number of inactive people in the Art group and propose[1] a policy for new admissions. Everyone agrees, JeffSpaleta even sketches[2] a succession of steps.

Wiki Migration

MikeMcGrath, from Fedora Infrastructure, asks[1] about the specific needs of the Art project in the light of the proposed Wiki migration to Mediawiki. MairinDuffy mention a Gallery2 plugin for Mediawiki integration, IanWeller offer his experience with Mediawiki and NicuBuculei asks a lot of questions about additional possible uses of Gallery2 and insists of the built-in gallery features offered by Mediawiki.

Security Week

In this section, we highlight the security stories from the week in Fedora.

Browser makers focus on beating malware

This is a rather interesting story about some of the new features we can expect to see in the next generation of browsers:

http://www.securityfocus.com/news/11508

As bad as security is in some areas, it's nice to see the browser market taking proactive steps about the problems. Most people just take their browser for granted, but it's probably one of the most complicated pieces of software they run, and its primary purpose is to process untrusted third party content in a safe manner. This is not an easy thing to do right. For the most part they do a great job of this.
