Date 2024-01-29 to 2024-02-05
Time all week

Website QA/Test Days
Matrix #test-day:fedoraproject.org(other clients|?)
Mailing list test

Can't make the date?
If you come to this page after the test day is completed, your testing is still valuable, and you can use the information on this page to test, file any bugs you find, and add your results to the results section. If this page is more than a month old when you arrive here, please check the current schedule and see if a similar but more recent Test Day is planned or has already happened.

What to test?[edit]

This Test Day will focus on Changes/KDE Plasma 6

Who's available[edit]

The following cast of characters will be available testing, workarounds, bug fixes, and general discussion:

You can chat with us on Matrix. See the infobox on top of the page to learn where to join.

Prerequisite for Test Day[edit]

  • A virtual machine or a bare metal machine
  • An installation of Fedora 40 KDE RC1. Make sure to fully update your system. If installing a fresh system, it's recommended to use the latest nightly image.

How to test?[edit]

Visit the results page and click on the column title links to see the tests that need to be run: most column titles are links to a specific test case. Follow the instructions there, then enter your results by clicking the Enter result button for the test.

Please also try to experiment and explore and perform tasks not mentioned in any of the pre-defined test cases.

Reporting bugs[edit]

Perhaps you've found an already-reported bug. Please look at:

All new bugs should be reported into the KDE bug tracker. A less-preferred alternative is to file them into Red Hat Bugzilla. General desktop issues are generally reported against plasmashell in the KDE bug tracker, but each component has its own "product" there.

We really need bug reports!
Please note that just mentioning your problem into the comments section on the results page is not very helpful. Very often those problems only happen in specific circumstances, or with specific steps taken. We need the logs and screenshots, and we need to be able to ask you followup questions. Please file bug reports, it's much more useful than a short comment. Thank you!

When filing the bug, it's very helpful to include:

  • exact steps you've performed (and whether you can reproduce it again)
  • screenshots or videos, if applicable
  • system journal (log), which you can retrieve by journalctl -b > journal.txt
  • all output in a terminal, if started from a terminal
  • your system description

If you are unsure about exactly how to file the report or what other information to include, just ask us.

Please make sure to link to the bug when submitting your test result, thanks!

Test Results[edit]

Test results will be exported here once the test day is over. See How to test? section for information how to submit results and see the live results.

  2. Able to create and switch users, log in/out, suspend and put the display to sleep. Unable to login to X11 thankfully, only the Wayland session is offered.
  3. Audio works 100%. Switches outputs automatically, all audio jacks work, Elisa and Firefox can play audio perfectly.
  4. Works as intended.
  5. USB thumbdrives automount and display contents properly, can automount secondary hard-drive properly using the KDE Disk Parition.
  6. Can install, uninstall and update Flatpaks from Discover, and update system from Discover. 1. Kwin works as expected under wayland, beyond encountering already fixed bugs on RC2, very smooth experience otherwise, I have been using rpm steam to play games on it with zero issue with both native linux builds and via proton. multimedia streaming via youtube at various resolutions works with no issue switching between screen modes with hardware acceleration working ootb on Firefox/Wayland. apologies for the double submit.
  2. To add on further, I've also enabled Login and Logout sounds, and both work flawlessly.
  3. I've created two users, and switched between them on the same boot with no issue, there is a cosmetic inconsistency with SDDM using the Adwaita cursor instead of the Breeze cursor by default.

  1. Can Open and edit PDFs. No problems encountered.
  2. Opens folders and displays contents correctly. Files get opened with their right associations.
  3. Works pefectly, but small issue relating to Kionite, opens in /var/home/$USER, unlike Dolphin which opens in /home/$USER.
  4. Plays .mp3 music files perfectly fine, but searches in /var/home/$USER/Music by default, which finds no music files. Adding /home/$USER/Music as a new location (adding it as /run/flatpak/doc/b00ae52b/Music within Elisa) graphically allows it to find the music. I suspect this is Kionite specific.

Once that was sorted, searching for albums tracks or artists works fine, as does shuffle and repeat play.
  6. Works exactly the same as Firefox in any other install of Fedora.

  1. opening files works as expected! Okular also detects additional packages like unrar to read file formats like .cbr correctly. Annotation works well with pen tablet support (using a wacom tablet and kcm-tablet)
  2. Local file browsing is excellent, moving aside already reported bugs in existing components like kio-admin (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=468793), google drive / kio-gdrive appears to be completely broken, I can't find any similar bug on KDE's bug tracker but after linking a google drive account, only the initial google drive directory can be browsed and accessed, opening any folder within the initial directory results in a "The file or folder /gdrivename/folder does not exist" error. The KDE Online Accounts' renaming prompt also does not work as the button to rename a logged in online account appears to not exist. I will be reporting these bugs upstream if they aren't already.
  3. all works! different colour schemes, split views, multiple tabs, downloading colour schemes, you name it, it works :)
  4. works perfectly with all files opened alongside all editing functionality and annotation (pen tablet support also works flawlessly!). there appears to be a cosmetic inconsistency where some buttons on some prompts appear to use the oxygen theme(?), appears to be upstream however.
  5. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480572 (Resource usage bug, could be abused further to make Elisa use even more ram) https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480573 (Audio output bug)
  6. Elisa initially worked pretty well importing my library of 7000+ tracks, ram usage initially was oddly high, averaging 540mbs~ after importing said tracks and scrolling through my library, this can also be reproduced by simply scrolling through a large library. Also ran into a (seemingly?) unreported bug with USB audio outputs (I've only tested with a USB audio output) where Elisa changes the sound output to the first sound output (this example, being my monitor.) when playing any track, I will be reporting to upstream.
  7. Firefox works as expected, hardware acceleration works out of the box on intel graphics.
