Do you think you might want to be a Fedora Advocate? Here is some of what you can expect:
- You are a person, friendly and approachable.
- You are leading the regional community or maybe even starting one. You should be eager and happy to work with Fedora Ambassadors to learn more about the project.
- People are the key. Everything that we do -- events, budgets, swag, blogging -- it's all done as an attempt to make personal connections with folks who either want to use or contribute to Fedora. Places, where Advocates get together, are one of the where new community members start. Celebrate a Release with a Party and help people contribute back to Fedora or maybe motivate them to give it a spin!
- You are the fabric of the community outreach. You expect to collaborate and work with people in your colleges and university. You are the upcoming face of Fedora in your region AKA Fedora Ambassador.
Get Started with Fedora Advocate
To begin your journey, there are a few steps you need to complete.
Every contributor to Fedora must first obtain a Fedora Project account. This is handled by the Fedora Account System (FAS).
Fedora Accounts and Group Membership
- Create your FAS account and (as part of that process) sign the contributor license agreement (FPCA).
- After obtaining a FAS Account, please request for advocate group membership.
Creating User Pages
Creating your user page lets you introduce yourself to the Fedora community. These pages let you collect useful information, like your email, your real name, or your IRC nick, in a public place so that others may contact you. You may also put helpful links, code snippets, or anything else that you want to share. Your user page is your own space, so feel free to make it look as you wish. Here's what you'll need to do to create your user page:
- Go to your user page.
- Click create, at the top, to start editing your user page. If you've already created a user page, click edit.
- Write your introduction in the textbox. Your introduction can contain whatever you'd like, but please write in English.
- When you're finished writing, click Save page
Here's some ideas on what you can include in your introduction:
- Email address
- Homepage or blog
- IRC channels you're typically in
- What you do, or would like to do, in the Fedora Project
While a wiki user page can be created with just plain text, you'll likely want to add some headings, bold text, or a picture. These can all be added using markup. Every page on this wiki is made of this markup, so you can use any of them as an example. You may also consider visiting Help:Editing to read a more thorough guide on how to construct pages.
Subscribe To Regional Mailing List
Regional ML is the crucial part of communication where the Advocate and look out of events happening and expresses his willingness to participate/host one. Talking to a local Ambassador directly although a nice approach but at some certain times of their busy schedule, they might not respond in the given timeframe. Advocates, should try to reach the community as a whole instead.
Plan & Organize
To receive your Fedora Advocate badge, Advocates will have to plan for their First Activity. Here are a bunch of activities Advocates can plan for:
- Release Parties
- Install Fests in Colleges/Universities/Hackerspaces
- Fedora Activity Day (FADs)
