Goal

To expose Women and more kids especially girls to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) activities using open source software.

Current list of open source software I am considering to use to develop activies my STEAM outreach:

   Fedora
   KDE and Xfce
   Inkscape
   Linux
   Python

Introduction

Upon attending the 2014 USA Science & Engineering Festival I was surprised that there wasn't a stronger present for open source software and projects. I felt that this would have been a great opportunity to show many educators, parents, and kids what open source is and how they could use it.

Then I thought maybe I could get a group together and we could maybe participate in then next festival in 2016. However, I have never done anything like this before. So although I have personally been using open source software, this is my first steps as an ambassador for open source. Despite that fact, I know that there is a need in my community to get more kids especially girls involved involved in STEAM projects and I can help fill that need. So my journey begins.

Background

I currently have no formal or special training in any STEAM field. Everything I know about Fedora, Linux and open source in general I learned by taking advantage of open source software, MOOCs, other online tutorials and Meetups. I am, however, preparing to take the LPI Exam.

Fedora and Me

I have been using a Linux O/S off and on for about 12 years; mainly Ubuntu till the switched to Gnome 3. I had tried Fedora but it was also Gnome 3. (Gnome 3 isn't for me) Then I took EdX CS50 and was re-introduced to Fedora with Xfce. Loved it. Tried other desktops. Fedora-KDE in the perfect combinations for me. I am still learning Fedora, but it has become my favorite O/S.
