Vedran Miletić
My name is Vedran Miletić and I am big fan of Fedora and free and open source software in general. I'm from Rijeka, Croatia; Croatia is a beautiful country between Central and Southeast Europe, and Rijeka is a town situated in northwest of the country by the sea coast. Currently I live in Munich, Germany.
Professional work
I hold a diploma in Mathematics and a PhD in Computer Science. Previously, I was working as a teaching assistant in Department of Informatics at the University of Rijeka. Among others, I was teaching practicals in Operating Systems, Distributed Systems, Computer Networks, and Network Management, relying on Linux and a diverse set of free software in the process. (If you can read Croatian, the course materials might be interesting.) My research was focused on the correlated failures in the optical telecommunication networks and also relied on Linux and open source software.
Right now, I am working as an high-performance computing application expert in the area of computational (bio)chemistry at Max Planck Computing and Data Facility, having previously finished my postdoc at Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, where I was researching the simulation of formation and breaking of disulfide bonds in biomolecules.
Open source work and activism
I have contributed to a number of open source software projects, including ns-3, LLVM, Mesa, GROMACS, CP2K, and LaTeX Beamer class.
I have been messing with Red Hat and Fedora for quite a long time, and using Fedora as my primary OS since Fedora Core 3. Aside from Fedora, I also use Debian, because, like Fedora, it puts freedom above everything else. I love free software movement and it delights me to see how much it has grown, and I did my best to get students interested in contributing to it on many occasions.
Other than that, I have been distributing Linux on CDs and DVDs to anyone who asked about it since 2004. For a while, I was a member of local LUG called RiLinux (short for Rijeka Linux), but unfortunately it was shut down in 2007. In 2009. a similar organization was resurrected under a different name, HULK-Ri. HULK-Ri has partnered with Department of Informatics to organize OpenClass every so often, usually once to twice per month. During these classes, we listen to seminars held by members of HULK-Ri on various topics in free software.
On a non-regular basis I write about free software, digital freedoms, science and open source scientific software, open standards, academia, and intellectual property at the blog of my group, featured on Fedora Planet.
Activities within Fedora
- Localization
- SciTech SIG, specifically packaging ns-3 Network Simulator
- On a non regular basis: bug triaging (mostly Kernel, Mesa, and X.Org bugs)
- On a regular basis: spreading the word about Fedora and free and open source software in general (don't we all? ;-) )
