Fedora Weekly News Issue 292

Welcome to Fedora Weekly News Issue 292[1]. The FWN 292 is a teeny news stream of the first week of April 2012.

The lead development news of the week is ALL MAJOR MILESTONES of Fedora 17 Beta, and their dependent tasks, will be pushed out by one week. Beta will now be looking at an expected release of 2012-04-10, and F17 GA is now scheduled for 2012-05-15.

The most talk-able news on Trade Press and Fedora Marketing list is the reviews titled GNOME 3.4 running on Fedora 17 alpha - a welcoming desktop environment for users who liked and used GNOME 2.x, and Fedora 18 to use tmpfs by default which was recently accepted by the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee (FESCo)[2].

Recent issues of FWN are now being published to Fedora Insight[3]. Insight offers RSS features, multimedia capabilities and more, beyond the mailshot/wiki FWN you have come to know and love. Try it out, and we'd love to hear your feedback!

Fedora 17 Beta Go/No-Go Meeting, Wednesday, March 28, @17:00 Eastern

Fedora New Project Leader, Robyn Bergeron[1] on Thu Mar 29 20:08:46 UTC 2012 announced[2],

"At the Go/No-Go meeting it was decided to slip the Beta by one week[3]. Minutes follow below[4].

Despite valiant efforts by many awesome people, two new blockers appeared between RC1 and RC2, for which fixes are still incoming and will require the creation of an RC3[5].

As a result, ALL MAJOR MILESTONES, and their dependent tasks, will be pushed out by one week. Beta will now be looking at an expected release of 2012-04-10, and F17 GA is now scheduled for 2012-05-15.

The adjustments to the full F17 schedule will be done (very late) tonight, and published to the Schedule wiki page[6]. Please note that the high-level milestones shown on the wiki page have already been updated to reflect the Beta slip.

Thanks for your patience. We will be meeting again next Wednesday for another Go/No-Go meeting."

Fedora Events

The purpose of event is to build a global Fedora events calendar, and to identify responsible Ambassadors for each event. The event page is laid out by quarter and by region. Please maintain the layout, as it is crucial for budget planning. Events can be added to this page whether or not they have an Ambassador owner. Events without an owner are not eligible for funding, but being listed allows any Ambassador to take ownership of the event and make it eligible for funding. In plain words, Fedora events are the exclusive and source of marketing, learning and meeting all the fellow community people around you. So, please mark your agenda with the following events to consider attending or volunteering near you!

Upcoming Events (December 2011 - May 2012)

  • North America (NA)[1]
  • Central & South America (LATAM): [2]
  • Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA)[3]
  • India, Asia, Australia (India/APJ)[4]

GNOME 3.4: Are We There Yet?

Jason Brooks posted[1]:

At Linux.com, Joe Brockmeier reviews GNOME 3.4 running on Fedora 17 alpha:

"So the big question for GNOME 3.4 is... are we there yet? Different people will define 'there' differently, but I define 'there' as 'a welcome desktop environment for users who liked and used GNOME 2.x.'

"I think the answer is yes, but only with a bit of tweaking. If choosing a desktop for myself, I'd probably opt for the Cinnamon fork of GNOME 3.x for now. But I wouldn't be hesitant to put GNOME 3.4 on a desktop for a friend or family member at this point."

Fedora 18 to use tmpfs by default

Jason Brooks posted[1]:

"A feature proposal by Lennart Poettering and Kay Sievers to mount the /tmp directory using tmpfs by default in Fedora 18 was recently accepted by the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee (FESCo). This means that the next version of Fedora will store the temporary directory in RAM rather than on a partition on the disk. This makes the system gain some performance and improves the lifetime of solid state drives (SSDs) as it limits writes to the disk."
