Candidates

Truong Anh Tuan (tuanta)

Introduction

  • Please briefly describe your history with Fedora:
    • Fedora User since the first Fedora Core released (Red Hat Linux user, before that).
    • Fedora Contributor since 2009.
    • Initialized and maintained the first Fedora mirror in Vietnam: http://virror.hanoilug.org/#fedora since 2009.
    • Organized a lot of Fedora Release Parties around the country since Fedora 11 (that's also one of three best Fedora 11 release parties worldwide: http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-ambassadors-list/2009-August/msg00151.html).
    • Founded Fedora Vietnam community with dedicated community website and mailing list since 2010.
    • Co-chaired/Co-organized Fedora Ambassadors APAC bi-weekly meeting since 2010.
    • Fedora package maintainer for two years.
    • Present Fedora at a lot of FOSS and Tech events.
  • What is the proper role for FAmSCo in a global project like Ambassadors?:
    • Coordinate ambassadors in regions and countries.
    • Support ambassadors to run their own events and other activities.
    • Coordinate with Fedora leadership and CommArch for budget and reimbursement.
  • What are your particular goals related to FAmSCo?:
    • Connect ambassadors among countries and regions better; support local ambassadors to make regional meetings more effective (e.g. more people involved, more effective discussions, faster from thoughts to actions, etc.).
    • Make budget budget/fund review, approval, usage and reimbursement faster and more effective.
  • What would you change about the way Ambassadors is run?:
    • Run more FADs, Fedora release parties, etc. to introduce more about Fedora to people and to share knowledge and experience among Fedora users and contributors as well.

Questionnaire

  • What should FAmSCo use its resources for?

In general, the defined goals are good enough. Others would be added more time to time.

  • What are your thoughts on changing FAmSCo?

FAmSCo, in general, is running fine. I have not got any big ideas of changing it.

However, something should be more clear for people who would like to learn more about FAmSCo. For example, I see the FAmSCo tasks page (linked from FAmSCo introduction page ) is not up-to-date. We need that page updated for ambassadors, especially the new ones, to know what FAmSCo have-done/doing/will-do.

From this point, I think we should update it asap by breaking down the common goals . If this could be called a change, it should be a big change: "Making the FAmSCo tasks more detailed".

  • Do you think that FAmSCo's meeting time is useful and conducted at a convenient date and time?

Absolutely

  • Do you see any problems in the mentoring process?

There are some limits in the current mentoring process. For example, I got some FOSS active contributors in my country to join into Fedora. At the moment they join, they need to choose a mentor from the list (who they didn't know before) while they want me to be their mentor (I have enough skills, experience and willing to be a mentor, but there are enough mentors in my region). I think, mentors who know ambassadors in person can help them much more. This could also keep ambassadors in one region/country be in touch better.

So, my idea is: mentor approval process should be changed to the way not limit the quantity of mentors but the quality of them. Any ambassador can nominated him/herself to be a mentor then that request could be reviewed firstly by regional ambassadors in a meeting and approved finally by FAmSCo... (or something similar that)

  • What will you be able to accomplish if elected, that you couldn't as an unelected contributor?

I see only one difference between two cases is: FAmSCo members can vote/decide a thing. If I am not elected at this time, I will still do anything I want to contribute to Fedora and wait for the next elections to nominate again (until I would not like to contribute to Fedora and FOSS and more :)

Alejandro Pérez (Aeperezt)

Introduction

  • Please briefly describe your history with Fedora:
    • Fedora User since Fedora Core , Linux User since 1994, Slackware, Red Hat and others
    • Fedora Contributor since 2009
    • Organize Fedora Panama Community
    • Fedora Translator
    • Fedora Packager
    • Ruby SIG
    • FudCon Panama main organizer 2011
    • Member of Floss-pa, Panamá foss community
  • What are your particular goals related to FAmSCo?:
    • Improve swags distribution on Latam
    • Organize a budged and it uses in Latam
    • Make budget distribution on Latam reach all ambassador that need it
    • Collaborate with other regions, share experience and learn from them
  • What would you change about the way Ambassadors is run?:
    • We need to improve mentoring to teach new ambassadors how to organize and use Fedora resources
    • FAD to improve Latam contribution to Fedora.

Questionnaire

  • What should FAmSCo use its resources for?

Famsco needs to use her resources to provide Ambassador or a Fedora contributor with the means to promote Fedora, as a speaker on a conference, with a booth on a show.

  • What are your thoughts on changing FAmSCo?

Having serve on FAmSCo for a short period has taught me, it recure more commitment to complete it goals and to keep members on their schedule meetings.

  • Do you think that FAmSCo's meeting time is useful and conducted at a convenient date and time?

Meetings are useful if the agenda is good and procured, since Fedora is a global community meeting date and time must be work best for FAmSCo members.

  • Do you see any problems in the mentoring process?

Mentoring process is dedicated matter, I see mentors works more as filter than as mentors (something that is needed), they are responsable to show an Ambassador on how to conduct it self and what, where and how she can do, what resources are available and provide advice to do what we spec from them.

  • What will you be able to accomplish if elected, that you couldn't as an unelected contributor?

Getting resource to our contributors and Ambassadors around latam, was started on this short period inside FAmSCo, but Latam has so much potential and needs. The main goal on this term for me will be to keep supporting our fellow Ambassadors around Latam and establish a supply chain so resources flow in Latam region. Work with Latam Ambassadors to be able to elaborate a proper budged and used it, something that we have started but we need to completed. Work and learn from other regions to see what we can do on Latam, each regions has its own challenges that need to be work out, but at the same time we have similar issues, one region solution may not work on the other, but gives us ideas that we can try.

Introduction

  • Please briefly describe your history with Fedora.
    • Started using Linux around 4 years ago, Fedora was my first distribution of choice and I found it better than any other.
    • I'm a packager, translator, designer, website team member and ambassador. Apart from that I also triage bugs with my free time, submit patches to upstream projects now and then, and I try to make Fedora as easy to use as possible, wherever I can influence that.
  • Why do you want to be a member of FAmSCo?
    • I want Fedora to be better, and to do that we need good collaboration between the different teams in the project and make sure everything will run as smoothly as possible. I hope that by being a member of FAmSCo I could help achieve this goal.
  • What is the proper role for FAmSCo in a global project like Ambassadors?
    • Coordinate the different groups and make sure everything is running as smoothly as possible.
  • What are your particular goals related to FAmSCo?
    • Make it easier for new ambassadors to join, mostly by making more responsible people sponsors, so that the waiting time to get sponsored into the Ambassadors project will be lower.
  • What would you change about the way Ambassadors is run?
    • Mostly, I would like to have a Fedora Events web app for ambassadors to use to organize events (incl. swag and budget requests, list of volunteers, and information for users).

Questionnaire

  • What should FAmSCo use its resources for?

Help Fedora ambassadors worldwide to achieve their goals, help ambassadors co-operate, organize events and such.

  • What are your thoughts on changing FAmSCo?

I don't know if we need change, the current state of affairs seems to be more or less working, I haven't heard any major complaints

  • Do you think that FAmSCo's meeting time is useful and conducted at a convenient date and time?

Yes.

  • Do you see any problems in the mentoring process?

Yes, there are not enough mentors.

  • What will you be able to accomplish if elected, that you couldn't as an unelected contributor?

Be more involved in the decision making process

Introduction

  • Please briefly describe your history with Fedora:
    • I started with Free Media group and then joined with the Ambassador group. Since then I am contributing to Design Team, Marketing Team, News,Summer coding and Localization work as well.
    • Locally, I have organized some events including release parties and fedora events. I represent the Fedora project in events and initiated the fedora local communityLK_Community.
    • I expanded the Fedora project in University level locally, that makes the local community stronger and also working with APAC ambassadors towards a strong community by assisting them.
    • I manage APAC Bi-weekly meetings with David and Tuan.
    • I wrangle fedora-apac trac and facilitate fellow FAms in the region.
    • Elected as a member of FAmSCo for F18 cycle.
  • Why do you want to be a member of FAmSCo?:

I hope I did manage F18 term in FAmSCo and I would like to keep it up by trying to achieve following vision;

    • FAmSCo is playing a major role with in the Ambassador Group, indeed they set the path to proceed.
    • First, the main aim is to support the Ambassador Group.
    • I need to provide a dedicated, effective support which Ambassadors need.
    • I would like to be a part of the team and be an active part of decision making process which lead shaping the project.
    • Further I want to make the FAmSCo, a place which is more attentive, sensitive, responsive and assisted to ambassadors and their needs.
  • What is the proper role for FAmSCo in a global project like Ambassadors?:
    • The main role of the FAmSCo is to provide the support that Ambassadors seek. The support should be fast and it should be effective. Such a support keeps the global ambassador effect active and useful. Therefore FAmSCo as the hub, should provide assistant and resources and ensure the ambassadors are getting what they need, when they need. Being align with the team is another very important role that FAmSCo should play. FAmSCo should be very sensitive with the ambassadors. Should identify their needs, ideas, thoughts and try to facilitate, encourage and even try to get novel ideas to shape the team and as well as the project. FAmSCo govern the ambassador team and as well as act as the central hub which connects other entities as well.
  • What are your particular goals related to FAmSCo?:
    • As a candidate it is easier for you if I mention my vision clearly, that shows mainly How I see and What I ll do as a member of the FAmSCo if I am elected.
    • FAmSCo should be responsive/ sensitive to needs and issues with in FAms.
    • FAmSCo should be attentive.
    • FAmSCo should be motivational.
    • Develop the regions country wise.
  • What would you change about the way Ambassadors is run?:
    • Overall the ambassador group is running well. There are few things we need to make up.
    • More interaction is needed with in the group, so that we can encourage the ambassadors to participate to meetings and the FAmSCo can help them to make the meeting successful being actively engaging with those.
    • It is required to develop and make strong the fedora communities countrywide, it is possible to use FADs (more FADs) for that and later when we have strong communities so we can have FUDCons in various countries with in regions covering most of the parts.
    • Increase quality on FAm activities (events, funding, reporting, guidelines, active participation, encourage FAms, more goal oriented..)

Questionnaire

  • What should FAmSCo use its resources for?

FAmSCo should be the platform where all the ideas and needs of FAm are discussed and facilitated. Resources that FAmSCo has, should be used to facilitate FAms to promote and expand the Fedora Project. FAmSCo should be the leading communication flow with in the FAm team which connects each and every FAm through the regional communities. Members in FAmSCo represent fellow FAms and try to facilitate to make FAm work easy and effective. So then ultimately the Fedora project get benefited.

  • What are your thoughts on changing FAmSCo?

This question is not clear enough. As I see there is no such need to change FAmSCo. FAmSCo is doing a good job shaping FAm way and facilitating FAm. That is required and needed. Is this about changing the way FAmSCo is operating, then again I dont see nay major requirement. We are at a good situation right now.

  • Do you think that FAmSCo's meeting time is useful and conducted at a convenient date and time?

Meetings are useful. Having meetings once a week is really hard but it is required to continue. Members will agree on convenient date and time once there is a changes in FAmSCo. Sometimes due to personal reasons, attending meeting will not be possible but if it occur frequently then we should discuss and choose another convenient time as all can attend.

  • Do you see any problems in the mentoring process?

It depends, there were some time period that we had troubles. And now we dont have much traffic on the fama, requesting Ambassadorship. When the process is considered it is pretty much straight forward. But we need to think what happen after the mentoring and thumbs up. Do we have any follow up after that? I think that is what we miss at this point. We need to take this up and it lead us to have a good conduct after one become a FAm.

  • What will you be able to accomplish if elected, that you couldn't as an unelected contributor?

First of I need to get the question clear. Who is unelected contributor? I suppose the question is about "What will you be able to accomplish if elected, that you couldn't as a contributor". I need to get elected because I need to represent fellow FAms in the FAmSCo, as I did before I would like to continue it.
